Free Music Review: Fine music, beautifully played

This is a really good CD, full of very fine music, beautifully played. Forqueray, who was active at the French court during the early 18th century, was a superb viol player who was greatly admired by (and often performed with) Couperin, and these pieces reflect his virtuosity and deep understanding of the instrument. The suites are, as was normal at the time, effectively collections of dances and there is a delightful variety from the soulful and stately to the lively and joyous. It's terrific music.
The performances from three true virtuosi are simply perfect, I think. There is enough of a feel of improvisatory freedom to give the music real life but they control it perfectly so that the dance structures and rhythms pulse through the programme. The understanding between the three is wonderful, and the overall sound of the two viols and harpsichord is rich, resonant and very beautiful. (And, as a bonus, there is almost no audible groaning from Savall.)
The sound quality is excellent, the notes are interesting and the presentation is attractive. It's not the most generously filled disc at just under 50 minutes, but those minutes are really, really good. Very highly recommended.
