Free Music Notes for Elis & TomFree Music Review: Furacao Hit: 4 StarsElis, the little hurricane, had one of the most powerful singing voices--amazing range and acuity, and it's all on display on this record, because Jobim's compositions have an equally impressive range. Some of the arrangements are a little too "poppy" for my taste, but the electric organ works to great effect on a tune like "So tinha de ser pra voce." And everyone is familiar with the version of "Aguas de Marco"--the very structure of the lyrics allows Elis and Tom's voices to engage in a sinuous cat-and-mouse game. By the end of the song, they are simply singing out disconnected syllables, both under the spell of the music. "Triste" is given a nice turn, though the guitar solo at the end doesn't quite fit. Elis lets it all go on one of Jobim's quintessential ballads, "Retrato em Branco e Preto", Tom very tasteful on the piano behind her. All in all, a little syrupy, yes, but it can be forgiven because it was the 70s, and syrup was everywhere.
Free Music Review: perfect...transcends categories Hit: 5 StarsThis is a CD that any music lover must have, whether or not he or she likes Brazilian music. Every song here radiates life, which makes it all the more poignant in light of Elis Regina's tragic death. I rate it right up there with Pirates Choice (Orchestre Baobab) and The Heart of the Congos (The Congos) as a masterpiece.
Free Music Review: Unabashedly romantic...and a slice of Heaven Hit: 5 StarsAs stated in my 'profile', this is one of my top 5 'stranded on a desert isle' recordings. In fact, though I wasn't stranded, this recording has made the island routes and made some friends for me who spoke different languages. The music on this recording has a universal language, though all the lyrics are in Portugese. The language is Love. The previous reviews say most of what I would have - but anyone who loves Elis and Tom must find (or buy) the Jobim compilation put together by Oscar Castro-Neves entitled "Antonio Carlos Jobim - The Man From Ipanema". On it you will find a rare treat or two. For instance, after the last track on the last CD (which is the Astrud Gilberto version of "Vivo Sohando"), unannounced in the notes or the discography, come 6 or 7 out-takes of Elis and Tom working on Aguas de Marco. It is at the same time revealing and hilarious. It is a glimpse into the fun and the personalities of both Regina and Jobim. Also included is the track "Bonita" which does not appear on this recording. Somewhat wickedly, Astrud is placed between Elis Regina or followed by her a few times just in case anyone really thinks she is a singer... I have heard this described as a musicians' recording, but judging by the number of reviews here and the comments, it appears that it is also a damn good listeners' recording as well. One last thing - if one were to be stranded on a desert island with this recording, if you played it loud enough you would not be stranded for long, trust me on this one.
Free Music Review: One of the 3 Master Albums of Vocal Bossa Nova Hit: 5 StarsThere are 3 master albums of Bossa Nova vocals: the Sinatra/Jobim album on Warner sung in English, this Elis Regina/Tom Jobim album sung in Portuguese and "Amoroso", the Joao Gilberto/Claus Ogerman collaboration, sung in Portuguese, English, Italian, Spanish! Don't miss the chance to have all three. Elis Regina is here in a 1974 album she had the opportunity to record as a celebration of her 10-year career at Polygram Records/Brazil. The gift was a collaboration with Antonio Carlos Jobim, composer of all repertoire. The album consists of 2 different ensembles: one set by Jobim's traditional environment with strings and another set with her then-current quartet, having her then-husband as a leader, Mr. Cesar Camargo Mariano. All stars! Important Note: Bossa Nova is not necessarily Jazz. Bossa Nova is not even Latin music. Bossa Nova is ... Bossa Nova. Listen to it!
Free Music Review: One of my favorites of all time Hit: 5 StarsThis album is a great treat, and if you haven't heard it yet you will enjoy it so much. It contains the definitive version of "Waters of March", possibly my favorite song. The contrast between Elis' smoky, incredible voice and Jobim's playing... it's a true classic.
