This is by far Anvil's best album, really a groundbreaking release at the time that was sorely overlooked. The striking thing about Metal On Metal is the variety - they really cover a lot of different sub genres of metal. "Metal on Metal" is straightforward power metal/hard rock, "March of the Crabs" - thrash, "Mothra" and "Heat Sink" - NWOBHM, "666" - death, etc. The production is great, the musicianship is outstanding, and there is much variety in song structure - things are definitely not 'cookie cutter'. The lasting power of this album is seen in the live show, which when I saw them last month, featured 5 songs off of "Metal On Metal". "Jackhammer" remains on of my favorite Anvil songs and took on a whole new meaning when I heard Lips explain what the song is about (nothing to do with heavy machinery!).
