Free Music Notes for Anything Goes - The New Broadway Cast RecordingFree Music Review: Patti LuPone and friends sing a whole lot of Cole Porter Hit: 5 Stars
Broadway musicals from before World War II (okay, before "Oklahoma") seem woefully dated when they are performed today ("Showboat" being the obvious exception that proves the rule). Therefore, what the producers decided to do when they resurrected Cole Porter's "Anything Goes" certainly meets with my approval. Fifty years after it was first produced, the original story by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse, which was revised by director Howard Lindsay and press agent Russel Crouse, was rewritten by Timothy Crouse (Russel's son) and John Weidman for this Lincoln Center Theater production. More importantly, a number of songs from the original score (e.g., "The Gypsy in Me," "Easy to Love") were restored and four other Porter songs, including "It's De-Lovely," were added to show. Now, since you can never have too many Cole Porter songs in a Cole Porter musical, this would be a good thing, not to mention a brilliant idea. I mean, come on, the plot is just an excuse to sing the songs. Take away the songs from "Anything Goes" and nobody is going to pay attention to what is left. The plot (in case you are curious) involves all sorts of fun aboard the S. S. American having to do with romance, gangsters in disguise, and other standard musical comedy fare. Patti LuPone has the choice role of Reno Sweeney, the sexy evangelist-turned-nightclub singer, and her performance is her best work this side of "Evita" (yes, better than "Sunset Blvd."), as evidenced by "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" and the title tune. Her leading man is Howard McGillin as Billy Crocker, a stockbroker's assistance. But in the final analysis the star of the show are the songs by Cole Porter and that means catchy tunes and delightfully wicked lyrics. You can enjoy this album without every bothering to figure out who is who or what is happening in terms of the plot. All together now: "In olden days a glimpse of stocking/Was looked on as something shocking/But now, God knows..."
Free Music Review: Fantastic recording of a great musical! Hit: 5 Stars
This is easily one of the best overall musical soundtracks I've ever heard. Patti LuPone is absolutely incredible. She steals the show in everything, but most noteworthy is her powerhouse performance of "Blow, Gabriel, Blow". Other notable songs include "You're the Top", "Anything Goes", "I Get a Kick out of You", and the hilarious "Friendship." I just got cast as Moonface Martin in my middle school Anything Goes play and I can already tell that this recording is going to help me a LOT. My one problem with this entire CD is Mr. Whitney's short song about rowing with the crew is god awful, it actually hurts your ears. I'm not exagerrating. However, he didn't have too much to work from as that is far and away the dumbest song on the tape. Otherwise, perfection.
Free Music Review: It's an angel, it's simply too too too diveen Hit: 5 Stars
I fell in love with Anything Goes after seeing a recording of its performance on the 1988 Tonys last summer, and got this album shortly after. It's wonderfully refreshing in lieu of modern theatre, and brings you back to the days of Cole Porter, Frank Loesser, and George Gershwin. However, being a recent-or somewhat recent-revival, it has a fresh sound to it. While Patti LuPone is hard to understand at times in the title number, she still make an EXCELLENT Reno Sweeney. The whole cast make such well defined characters and bring so much energy to the show, you can't help but be in a good mood when you listen to this album! The golden age of Broadway still exists, and this recording is proof.
Free Music Review: Excellent!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This CD has some of my favorite Cole Porter songs on it, especially the title song, "You're the Top," and "I Get a Kick Out of You." These songs alone make the CD worth buying, but a lot of the other songs are catchy as well, such as "Blow Gabriel, Blow." However, I have to say that I do NOT like the song "Be Like the Bluebird," and "Friendship," although I can tolerate it is more annoying than enjoyable. Also, I was sad to hear that not all of the many verses of "Anything Goes" were sung. Nevertheless, the CD still gets five stars because of those couple of WONDERFUL songs I mentioned in the beginning.
Free Music Review: Best Album Ever! Hit: 5 Stars
I'd seen the 1962 version of Anything Goes 4 times and even played Sir Evelyn in a production once! I heard about the new revival version and hoped to see it. I finally found this CD after having the 1962 Anything Goes CD for several years. After listening to the authentic 1930's band and Patti LuPone's amazing cabaret voice, I set out to see this wonderful show. This 1987 is terrific! The only mistake is taking out Bonnie's HEAVEN HOP and changing her name to Erma. It's still a great show, though and this Cast Recording is a wonderful representation of what Cole Porter wanted his music to sound like.
