Selected Ambient Works '85-'92, while extremely raw and scattershot, provides enough glimpses into the James's musical genius that it is well worth the investement. The first three tracks are particularly mesmerizing, especially considering the fact that they were recorded in this guy's basement when he was something like 12 years old. The newer albums (Richard D. James, Druqks, ect) show James firing on all cylinders, able to incorporate a number of styles into single LP's, but this is the album that got the whole thing rolling. James takes a number of chances artistically, yet exerts a considerable amount of restraint and discipline in his recordings. A harebringer of things to come...check it out.
