Free Music Notes for Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos

Free Music Review: Excellent despite lack of percussion
Hit: 5 Stars

I was not disappointed with this album. The players manage to capture the melodic qualities of Metallica's music in an entirely acoustic format. On some of the tracks the cellos almost sound like guitars but the one major difference is the lack of percussion. The drumming is what gives Metallica's music (particularly their early work) the powerful, driving quality and edge of manic humor. If Apocalyptica added a drummer to their lineup they could almost qualify as a rock group, however as it is the lack of percussion has the effect of actually playing up the somber, heavy quality of the compositions while missing the energy and tempo that serves to counterbalance the inherent darkness somewhat in the originals. In short, this album is to Metallica what MTV Unplugged is to Nirvana.

Free Music Review: I almost fell off of my chair when the mucic started
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a metallica fan as long as i can remember but i'm not really into tributes. And Metallica's tunes played on cellos? I wasn't expecting much. But when I jummped to 'puppets' and it started, I almost had a heart attack! I could NOT believe how seamlessly the bands music was played on these instruments. It is an incredible sound! You can almost believe that these songs were written and arranged for a 60 piece orchistra and not a metal band.If you're a metallica fan with an open mind to music or if you are just curios to hear metallica really 'unplugged',or even a classical music listener I would say snatch this one up NOW! I sure hope that these cello players like other metal bands just as much. Could you imagine Testament or Megadeath on cello? SICK!

Free Music Review: What can I say?!
Hit: 5 Stars

I was first introduced to this group on the radio and after I heard them the first time I just had to have the CD. Not being a hardcore metal lover, but definitely able to listen and enjoy, this CD gave me a new twist on all the Metallica I hear on the radio. When I hear these songs on the radio now, I can hum along but I don't know the words. This is a great CD that creeps into your brain and makes you wanna dress up in black. I've even seen it turn rapping classical cello players into Apocalyptica junkies who sit in front of their CD players all day trying to learn the music by ear instead of practicing their scales and concertoes and listening to Puff Daddy. I wish these guys would come to Cleveland so I can hear a live concert.

Free Music Review: Plays Who on What?
Hit: 5 Stars

I was completely dumbfounded when a fellow heavy metal lover friend of mine told me about this group. They did what? I love Metallica dearly and was more than a little apprehensive about this CD. When he said "cellos," my reaction was, "oh, those funny looking violins that you put between your legs, right?" I have a new appreciation for the cello when it was used as a metal instrument. "The Unforgiven" is my favorite Metallica song, and I love it even more after hearing the Apocalyptica version. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" was chilling, and "Master of Puppets" and "Creeping Death" made me cheer. Even classical players ought to enjoy this CD, especially if you play those funny-looking violin things...

Free Music Review: awesome cd
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is definetitly one of my favorite. these four guys make this sound so much like Metallica it's unreal. I mean, i can understand the cello as a substitute for guitar and bass, but they even make drum sound alikes with cellos in some parts. My personal favorites are "The Unforgiven" and "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)". They also make "Master of Puppets" sound overwhelmingly like the original except for the absence of vocals. Personally, the absence of vocals on this cd makes it sound twice as better than the originals alone, not counting the other awesome things they do. Bottom line- get this cd as quickly as possible.
