I myself am a cellist, and at first scoffed at the idea of cellos performing Metallica. But the first time I heard this album, I was sold. Both the technical ability and the quality of arrangements are incredible, and the crunchy tone is so close to overdriven guitars, sometimes you swear it is James and Kirk themselves. If you are into classical or metal, or are sick of the Backsteet Boys and all the other cookie cutter MTV bands out there today, give this album a listen. Ok, I was skeptical ... How the hell are cellos going to carry off Metallica, and not just the "pretty" stuff but the ugly crunchy stuff, that we all know and love ... Ok, first question, how the f*** do they get a cello to sound like that? ... #2 this urge to headbang to cellos, what's that about??? (yes you feel very self-conscious when the urge arises) ... This is a great instrumental album! Metallica has a kind of classical music style (classical as in Mozart, Bach and Beetoven - not Led Zeppelin, black sabbath and ZZtop) to them and being played by cellos really bring that out. If you think that just the rythm is played...YOUR WRONG! Kirk Hammets leads are played note for note and in some songs they play some of the drumming on a cello! I may not know much about Metallica, or Apocalyptica for that matter, but I definately love this album.I'm in an orchestra and 3 of our cellist have begun playing this and it impressed the hell out of me. Not only were they playing really well, but when they played with the CD it sounded even better. I probably couldn't tell you jack about Metallica but i definately love this music!Free Music Review: I couldn't stop laughing!

Take Metallica. Mix in four cellos. Shake well. If you enjoy the metal stylings of Metallica, then this CD is a must buy. From the second you pick up the CD in the store (or take it out of the mail box) to the end of Welcome Home (Sanitarium) you will not stop laughing. The concept of four cellos playing metal is an strange one, but Apocaliptica does it masterfully. Bravo.
