On this, the Continent's answer to the "Spice" album, Aqua serve up a Scandinavian Cheerleading Suite of bouncy, shiny Europop tunes made for dancing through six solid months of sunshine (though I guess they don't get that in Denmark). Shucking off the frigid synths and witless, Frankfurt streetwalker-meets-USAF "rapper" vocals that formerly defined the genre, Aqua put enough humor and warmth into their music to make Europop respectable-- though they probably don't want that. Still, "Aquarium", like some of the French house acts, blurs the distinction between 'cool' and 'uncool' by fearlessly showing off the energy and freshness of styles usually taken for granted-- and, as with Daft Punk, listening to Aqua you're likely to feel that this is what dance music was meant to be. "Doctor Jones" plays like that Mariah Carey summer-camp video turned into a kiddie-rave, with Lene invoking thoughts of puppy love over manic beats. "My Oh My" tempts with thoughts of political allegory, but the saccharine energy will keep you from keeping your mind. Ditto "Barbie Girl", the album's most famous head-scratcher and booty-shaker. The flashes of social commentary are a kind of garnish, a tip of the hat to skeptics to convince them that, yes, there is intelligence at work here. But the main product of that intelligence is the music itself: "Happy Boys & Girls", "Doctor Jones", "Lollipop (Candyman)", et. al. are tunes for the present incarnations of Abba's Dancing Queen, still young and sweet and finding a musical sugarfix in this sweet, silly, delirious dance-pop delight.
Free Music Review: Great beats and fun to listen to! Hit: 5 Stars
I simply love this CD. If a person says this band has no talent, he or she obviously has never tried to write music. I find that 99% of the time, the public deems a group "untalented" if they do not find the music to their liking. So what if upbeat dance music is not your cup of tea? Then go listen to something else. When did your personal disdain become synonymous with general lack of talent? There are many people out there who hate widely respected and/or popular artists (The Beatles, Elvis, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears, et cetera). And of course no artist or group can obtain 100% acceptance. However, do try to respect what they are doing; you do not have to like them, but at least give them credit for doing what they do. Try writing a plethora of songs and rocketing your band to stardom. Okay...enough ranting and raving. Now my review:Aqua is a fun band to listen to. It's a great CD to put on for dancing, driving, or just to pass the time. Personally, I love Aqua's music, their style, and their innovative quality. I have the Aqua Diary and I enjoyed watching all the bandmates having fun touring around the world. :) I bought the CD when it came out and I'm still listening to it. I find that I get tired of a lot of artists after some time, but Aqua is one of the few bands that have stayed. Soren, René, Lene, and Claus are very talented people. I hope they knock 'em dead with their second album! Aqua rules!
Free Music Review: FANTASTIC!!! - PURE ENERGY!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this CD just to get "Barbie Girl", but I always had a hunch about Aqua being awesome.
And thanks God, I was overwhelmingly right!!!
This CD is incredibly energetic!!!
If you like to dance and 'move it, move it', do not hesitate and buy this album.
It is obvious that not all tracks blasts Supernova mega-forces, but that is perfectly natural!!!
You just can NOT dance for that long at that level.
Smooth tracks are beautifully crafted and, although they are pop love-songs, they all are deeply moving if you are in the right mood!!!
Dance tracks are extraordinare!!!
According to my taste, this is the chart (100/100):
Happy Boys & Girls ---- 100
My Oh My 100
Barbie Girl 100
Doctor Jones --------- 100
Good Morning Sunshine - 90
Heat of the Night ------ 90
Be a Man 90
Lollipop (Candyman)--- 100
Roses are Red -------- 100
Turn Back Time -------- 90
Calling You 100
Result: 96.3 out of 100!!!
Summarizing, BUY THIS CD!!!
- I have been a music collector since the age of 6. I am 36 now, so it's been 30 years of filtering. So, when I say buy it, believe what I say and BUY IT!!! -
Free Music Review: AQUA Hit: 5 Stars
Aqua is a Danish dance group, best known for their 1997 breakthrough single "Barbie Girl". The group formed in 1989, and achieved huge success across the world in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Although often criticised by the media, the group managed to top the UK Singles Chart with their first three singles, few artists have achieved that. The group released two albums, Aquarium in 1997 and Aquarius in 2000, they split up in July 2001. The group sold an estimated 28.7 million albums and singles.
In their prime, Aqua made singles chart top ten in a number of countries where European Dance acts would not normally succeed, including the USA, Australia and Japan. The group also caused controversy with the double entendres in their song "Barbie Girl", with the Barbie doll company Mattel filing a lawsuit against the group. The lawsuit was rejected in 2002.
The group consisted of Lene Nystrøm, René Dif, Søren Rasted, and Claus Norreen. All the members were Danish except Lene, who was Norwegian. Since their 2001 split, Lene, René and Søren have all achieved solo chart success, and Claus has continued to work in the music industry remixing other artists' material. Aqua's album Aquarium is very upbeat and very fun Dance Music.

A fantastically trashy collection of cartoonish Europop, often so cheerful and upbeat that it's almost depressing ('Happy Boys and Girls' for example). The haunting vocal interplay of squeaky Lene and gruff Rene is something that you don't forget in a hurry, and the artfully-mangled English (almost the first line on the album is 'I've got a feeling you could use a little smile') adds to the goofy charm. It's actually quite hard to not like them - they don't seem to have any pretentions to being 'art' (unlike, say, 'Ace of Base').The stand-out tracks here are the singles 'Barbie Girl', 'My Oh My', 'Dr Jones', and 'Turn Back Time' (which sounds extraordinarily Madonna-esque), with 'Happy Boys and Girls' and 'Calling You' acting as solid reserves. Most of the other songs are fairly anonymous - 'Heat of the Night' is fun, but you'll probably skip the rest. Given the band's inventive visual style, it would have been nice if the album had included the amusing videos, but you can't have everything.
