Free Music Review: Essential Arch Enemy - remastered!

Arch Enemy gets a fair amount of attention and publicity due to the fact that they were pretty much the first death metal band with a female vocalist. Fortunately, their music more than lives up to the hype. This holds true for their early, pre-Angela Grossow albums as well, of which 1999's Burning Bridges was the third.
Burning Bridges is probably my favorite of the early Arch Enemy albums, despite the fact that it's the shortest of the three (just 8 songs totaling 35 minutes). The band just seemed to get everything right with this release. Michael and Christopher Amott's twin guitar assault was perfect, combining devastating riffs and powerful melodies, and Johann Liiva's vocals were sharp and brutal, a marked contrast to his work on Stigmata. The songs on Burning Bridges are all heavy, powerful, melodic blasts of intensity, but "Dead Inside", "Silverwing" and the monster title track stand out as the best of the best.
Burning Bridges, like its follow-up album Wages of Sin, is a near-perfect melodic death metal album that is a great example of what the Swedish melodic death metal scene had to offer in the late 90's. It was a time when bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and Soilwork were releasing career-defining albums, and Arch Enemy's work was right up there with the best of them.
If you're only interested in Arch Enemy's current incarnation, then Burning Bridges probably won't interest you much. If you're a serious Arch Enemy fan, or just appreciate good quality melodic death metal, regardless of how "hot" the singer is, you're going to want to check out this album.
Edition Notes: Century Media reissued Burning Bridges (along with Stigmata but sadly not Black Earth) in 2009. The deluxe reissue features digitally remastered sound, a nice slipcase, expanded liner notes, and a hefty nine bonus tracks. The first four bonus tracks - "Fields of Desolation `99", "Star Breaker (Judas Priest cover)", "Aces High (Iron Maiden cover)" and "Scream of Anger (Europe cover)" - were originally included on the Wages of Sin bonus disc. The final five bonus tracks are live songs taken from the Burning Japan Live 1999 Japan-only release. While I wouldn't recommend re-buying Burning Bridges just for the bonus tracks, I'd definitely recommend the reissue on the basis of the improved sound quality. This is one of those albums that you really need to own in the best possible format/edition.
