Free Music Review: The Debate
Hit: 5 Stars

Reading reviews on this site and elsewhere - people are generally claiming that this CD is either no where near as good as the first or way better. Why?

Not As Good: It does not grab you as quickly as the first one did. It doesn't have some of the tangled poetic wordplay that the first one did. So it is different and it is its being different that causes the debate. Better: Brianstorm rocks. After a few listens however these songs slowly start to creep into your inner ear and stay there. And, there are some classic custs on here: Flourescent Adolescent, Only Ones Who Know, This House Is A Circus, Old Yellow Bricks, 505.

My humble opinion: One is about as great as the other but the first will remain the masterpiece as it was an album that both introduced a new band and grabbed you by the...

In the spirit of being helpful let me point out a few fantastic b-sides and non album tracks that are some of the bands absolutely best songs:

Bigger Boys And Stolen Sweethearts (I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor)

Temptation Greets You Like A Naughty Friend (Brianstorm)

Who The F*** Are Arctic Monkeys (Who The F*** Are Arctic Monkeys)

Despair In The Departure Lounge (Who The F*** Are Arctic Monkeys)

Leave Before The Lights Come On (Leave Before The Lights Come On)

Also, The Leave Before The Lights Come On video is a cool concept.

Lastly, go on YOUTUBE and watch the Christmas message the drummer put out last year. Funny, charming, and down to earth. Oh, and he can play the drums quite good as well...

Free Music Review: Excellent Sophomore Effort
Hit: 5 Stars

It was probably hard enough for Arctic Monkeys to live up to the kind of hype that preceded the release of their first album let alone follow it with another album of equal quality. Yet that is precisely what they have done. I first heard about them through a couple of English music magazines I read regularly and bought the first album shortly after its release. That was so good there was no question as to whether I would give them another shot so I pre-ordered this a year ago and was delighted to hear that Arctic Monkeys are not just a one stroke wonder.
Favourite Worst Nightmare confirms that Arctic Monkeys are one of the freshest sounding rock bands around today. The band has good basic rock instincts that it blends with judicious touches of punk and alt-rock. This CD is loaded with winners. My favorites are Brianstorm (no, not Brainstorm), Teddy Picker, Flourescent Adolescent, Do Me A Favor, This House Is A Circus, If You Were There Beware, Old Yellow Bricks, and 505. Most songs are relatively short and to the point in the classic punk manner. My only complaint is that the album is short as well, clocking in at just under forty minutes.
If you are already an Arctic Monkeys fan, you know how good they can be. If you are unfamiliar with them and just curious, then I highly recommend Favourite Worst Nightmare if you enjoy the style of music described above.

Free Music Review: EXCELLENT!
Hit: 5 Stars

This album's excellence makes me literally drool out of both pride and satisfaction.
Pride: For the simple fact that the band has truly grown since their previous musical triumph, topping it with a much darker, richer, and more
promising piece of modern Alt/Punk Rock.
Satisfaction: Frankly, I'm astounded by the songs, made so excited I can barely contain myself everytime I blast them through my small room.
The first album was fast and sharp, teeming with bounce, wit, and charm. They've lost none of that. They simply seemed to have channeled that youthful vigor into a more profound stream of thought, the lyrics now more thoughtful and sophisticated, almost so personal that they're difficult to decipher.
As for the sound, listeners are immediately forced with the urge to swiftly bob along, dance outright, even. The first album had this effect as well, but I feel that Favourite Worst Nightmare's strength generates more of a physical impression and reaction due to its profound uniqueness.
It's new and it's different and it boasts and overpowering sense of nuance, so noticably unique compared to today's endless spew of groups with similar sounds, lyrics, looks, and messages.
They are unlike any other, and I love them for it.

Free Music Review: Favourite Worst Nightmare
Hit: 5 Stars

This album is proof that there is no such thing as "the sophomore curse." I believe that the sophomore album is where the band fixes the mistakes they made on their debut, and that's exactly what the Arctic Monkeys did. This album was much more art-rock and experimental than their chart-topping debut, 2006's Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, and that's exactly what I look for in a band. The album kicks off with a bang with "Brianstorm" and stays strong until track 6, "Only Ones Who Know," the low point of the album. I'm not saying I don't like slower songs, but I still don't think the Monkeys can pull them off. Last album they disappointed me with "Mardy Bum" and "Riot Van" and I can't say "505" is that much better. But aside from those two tracks, the album is strong from start to finish with smart lyrics, twanging guitars, and fast drum rhythms. (They also get bonus points for having an album cover that really catches your eye, unlike their debut that has that guy that looks like Adam Sandler smoking...)

Free Music Review: YES!!! Supremely rocking album!
Hit: 5 Stars

These guys just rule. It's a tight, concise album, that thankfully avoids the sophomore slump of trying to make a "Big Artistic Statement" (*cough* bloc party *ahem* killers) and instead focuses on rocking hard. There are no wasted notes or time on this album - none! The album is filled with razor sharp hooks and terrific musicianship, particular the spectacular drumming of Matt Helders. The often cryptic, but snidely clever and evocative lyrics and singing of Alex Turner is a real asset as well. Those involved in the recording, mixing, producing etc. deserve kudos as well - the sound just jumps out of the speakers! I love this album! Since I have no life, I listen to a LOT of music and I usually burn through albums quickly, listening once or twice and moving on, but this one I keep coming back to again and again and again.

This album is easily the best of '07 so far, BY FAR.
