Free Music Notes for Favourite Worst NightmareFree Music Review: Incomprehensible Hit: 1 StarsI check the charts frequently to see what's movin'. This album was on a top 20 chart I was looking at. I HATED their last album. And I hate this one too. This is the kind of album "anyone could make". Now what do I mean by that? It means, that if a group of people who had a moderate amount of skill playing musical instruments decided to "get together" and "hash out some ideas", and featured a "vocalist" who somehow believed he could "sing", that somehow if they could cobble together the financing to afford studio time, that it would be WORTH recording something. Anything. Nothing - nothing that required any talent, any discernible "ear" for a song. I listened to this and by the time it was finished, I couldn't recall a single memorable note or phrase. They think they're "rocking", a "sensation". But it's nothing but waste in every sense of the word. I call upon Arctic Monkeys to drop "Favourite" from the title for subsequent future pressings of this cd...not that it sell enough to warrant re-orders.
Free Music Review: Very Disappointing... Hit: 2 StarsArctic Monkeys' debut album was so intensely good, this album was one of the most anticipated records of the year for me. The anticipation was only amplified upon the hearing of the first new single, Brainstorm, which sounds like it could've been one of the best tracks from Whatever People Think We Are. And that song delivered as the opener, but I kept growing more and more disenchanted over the course of the album. By the last song, I realized, "I didn't like this album at all!" The songs are meandering, laborious, and boring, taking all that was good about the Monkeys, all the energy and attitude, and throwing it away for irritatingly listless atmospheric ventures.
This is a classic case of Sophomore Slump. Let's hope they come back with a third disc as mindblowing as their first!
Free Music Review: difficult second album Hit: 3 Starsthe guitars, the bass lines, the catchy lyrics, everything is there we've come to expect from the Arctic Monkeys, except one thing... the songs. Maybe its just the quality of their first record clouds this offering, but it just falls a bit flat, more so with repeated listening.
Free Music Review: YES!!! Supremely rocking album! Hit: 5 StarsThese guys just rule. It's a tight, concise album, that thankfully avoids the sophomore slump of trying to make a "Big Artistic Statement" (*cough* bloc party *ahem* killers) and instead focuses on rocking hard. There are no wasted notes or time on this album - none! The album is filled with razor sharp hooks and terrific musicianship, particular the spectacular drumming of Matt Helders. The often cryptic, but snidely clever and evocative lyrics and singing of Alex Turner is a real asset as well. Those involved in the recording, mixing, producing etc. deserve kudos as well - the sound just jumps out of the speakers! I love this album! Since I have no life, I listen to a LOT of music and I usually burn through albums quickly, listening once or twice and moving on, but this one I keep coming back to again and again and again.
This album is easily the best of '07 so far, BY FAR.
Free Music Review: Album Rocks Hit: 5 StarsThis is one way to top a first album, the Arctic Monkey's just go from strength to strength.
