Free Music Review: A Great Example of Musicians Who Can Be Categorized Making Something That Can't Be.

I use the term "dark metal" because this is NOT a black metal album. This is a metal album with black "tinges" to it. "Sideshow Symphonies" was one of those rare albums that came along and said, "Listen! This is something different.. and we mean it!" Simen "ICS Vortex" Hestnaes is one of most interesting vocalist in metal and without his vocals, I don't think I would like it nearly as much as I do. The guitar work is additive but doesn't overpower any of the other elements. Hellhammer is an amazing drummer and if you're looking for one of his works that showcases his ability and range, this does him great justice. He has done more "technically" better albums, but this is still one of his "must hear" ones. That goes without saying, however, I do think when all of the elements are obsorbed as a whole the experience is undeniably enjoyable to listen to.
It has the pace of a doom-metal album but a constant atmosphere of wonderment and complexity. The layers of music is what make this album so great, in my opinion. You can go back and listen to it time and again and hear things you didn't the first pass through. I love when musicians pull this kind of mix off.
Getting past my love for this album, you would like to know if it's something that you would buy? Well...
If you like your metal with some technical difference to the songs and a constant change of pace, you'll like it. (Although, as a whole, the album does blend together but in a good way)
If you like Vortex's vocal style, you'll like it.
If you like hearing something different but not so different that it's out of the realm of your album selection, you'll like it.
And that's where this album truly shines. I am a black/death/doom metal kinda guy and I love this album, but it doesn't *truly* fit into those categories. Listen to this album just once and you'll see what all these people are talking about. Putting this album into words is something I cannot do. So you'll just have to find a site with some tracks available and see if it suits your fancy. I Hope this was helpful!
