Free Music Review: Interesting... but

There isn't alot of cohesion on this album.
Honestly it sounds too much like they were trying way too hard. I think most of the reviews here are from long-time fans, I just couldn't get into this album.
There is some outstanding musicianship, but this album definitely belongs more to the category of 'progressive' than 'black' metal. There are some great moments, like the final track, "For to end yet again." It's a good song in 6/8 time that pulses along like a speedy waltz. There is some impressive piano work about 2 minutes in and overall this track definitely is the best work, turning into a mellow keyboard-driven piece, coming back to a dark and nasty guitar song again. It's the redeeming value of this album.
Track 2, "Nightmare Heaven" does have some excellent electronics with some distorted beats and some decent (though predictable) keyboard direction.
As a whole it sounds to me what it would sound like if Dream Theatre tried black metal. It's uninspiring--except for noted exceptions. There is very little emotion in this record, there's music, there's singing, screaming and notes, but these guys do NOT 'feel' their music. This is the trap and the Dream theatre reference.
Compare this to Wintersun, Dissection, Opeth, or Nevermore. Yeah, Nevermore isn't always the the best musicianship--but even if they rehash an occaisional riff--it's always sincere. You always 'feel' what they wanted you to feel. This one just never connects you to the music.
