Free Music Review: An Amazing Performance!!

I was fortunate enough to actually be at the concert in Lexington when this was recorded. I remember Arlo mentioning they would be recording that night, but I assumed it was for the orchestra's use, not a full public CD release. What an awesome surprise this was to me! The night of the concert I felt like the orchestra was overpowering Arlo's vocals a bit (I was in the 2nd row, center), but everything is perfectly balanced on the CD. I honestly had no idea that the orchestra would play such a major role during the concert, and though it was a surprise to me, I'm glad that I had the opportunity to be present during this performance. The concert program states that Arlo dedicated this concert to his parents, bringing both of they're musical styles together in union. This CD contains a mix of old and new songs. The old songs, such as Last Train" and "City of New Orleans" benefit tremendously from the symphony orchestra. The orchestra never overpowers the lyrics or Arlo's voice.
In times like these is a great song, beautifully sung. Overall, this is the best work from Arlo Guthrie in a long time.

What a great and pleasant surprise this album is. I chanced to hear a couple of tracks on internet radio, and was captivated. I had a few Arlo Guthrie LPs back in the seventies, and then lost touch really. That shows you the power of radio at the right moment.
All these songs are so sensitively and sweetly adapted to orchestral arrangements. Great to note the legendary James Burton involved in that.
This whole album from beginning to end is a pure delight. Anyone enjoying Arlo Guthrie will love this.

Arlo is a unique musician and performer. He is a gifted but extraordinarily unassuming instrumentalist who is the heir to an incredible musical tradition. This cd highlights his live musical performance which is only enhanced by a symphony orchestra. If you want an aural portrait of a typical Arlo concert get the Live in Sydney cd (which is also 5 star), but if you want to concentrate on his undoubted musical genius get this one. Pick the next rainy night, a bottle of deep burgundy wine, dim the lights and put this into your sound system. For me it was like sitting by the ocean communing with an old friend. The strings work.
