Free Music Notes for State of Trance 2007Free Music Review: So close to perfection! Hit: 5 Stars
This is the second trance album that I had ever purchased (right after "In My Memory" from Tiesto). I have to say that on the first couple of run throughs I was very disappointed with the album as a whole. Looking back I believe it was just because I was unfamiliar with the genre, but there only seemed to be a couple of tracks that I could really get into on it, and at that point, I probably would have given this album a 3 star or even 2 star. My tastes have greatly matured since then I now see the error of my ways! I now own ASOT '05, '06, '07, '08 & '09 and this is by a mile my favorite. The first disc is nearly flawless, except the hole in the middle of it where "The Distance" lies. With it's wonderful mixing and great track list, it's easily a five star.
Here's the detailed review:
1. Light The Skies (Retrobyte's Classice Electrobounce Mix) - 8/10 - Very nice intro to the album. My only complaint is that they lyrics are too repetitive and kind of dumb, actually. But still, nice intro track.
2. Carry Me Away - 10/10 - One of my absolute favorite chill songs I own. The melody is just awesome and the vocals are flawless. It truly does give you that "on the beach" feel.
3. Together We Rise - 8/10 - Another great chill track that leads on that same great feel of the album.
4. Who Will Find Me - 9/10 - This track starts out very slow and melancholy and then completely opens up into an uplifting gem on the album, very impressed with this song.
5. Reasons To Forgive - 7/10 - This track turns around the feel of the album to a much darker tone, but it still fits very well with the rest of the album. Full of angst, this is a good addition.
6. The Distance - 5/10 - Maybe it's just me but this track seems totally out of place on this album. The disc is full of emotion and this track just seems to be a filler, about the only track on the disc that's a let down.
7. Wouldn't Change a Thing - 6/10 - This starts the disc back on the right track, but I'm not too much of a fan of the vocals. This ends the hole that it feels like is in the middle of the album.
8. In & Out (DJ Shah Rework) - 8/10 - The first few times I listened to this track, I was disappointed because the vocals just seemed too forced, but they have definitely grown on me, and It's actually now one of my favorite songs on the disc.
9. Touch The Sun (Rank 1 Remix) - 9/10 - This is a dark song and makes a perfect segway to the next track Kalopsia. It really sets the mood darker than before, and the vocals are just awesome.
10. Kalopsia - 10/10 - This was the first trance song that I absolutely fell in love with when I started listening to the genre. I could play this song over and over, and each time it ended I would just want to start it over again!
11. Always A Fool - 7/10 - This track is descent and suffers a little for being in the shadow of Kalopsia, but the vocals are nice and the melody keeps with the feel of the disc.
12. Tremble - 8/10 - First of all I just have to say, Armin did a really really bad job mixing this with the last track. The weird melody from this track does not fit at all with the end of Always a Fool and it ends up sounding ridiculous. Anyway, the track is a nice round finish for the album with a very nice melody and great beat. The only thing wrong with it is that high pitched sound they threw in every once in a while :(
Overall disc rating 9/10 - This disc is so close to pure bliss, but that hole in the middle of it takes you out of the mood, and then once In & Out hits, you are able to get back into it. So disappointing that it was put in there, but still an awesome overall disc.
1. Miserere - N/A - This is just the intro track, so it really doesn't seem relevant to give it a rating, but it is a great intro track. The heart beat, church choir and the beat that comes in towards the end give it a very mysterious feel.
2. Rush Hour - 8/10 - Very nice first track for the album. It feels really intense and it really has that "in the club" feel to it.
3. Walk Away (Terry Ferminal Mix) - 6/10 - This is another track that just feels out of place on the mix. The vocals sound right at home here, but the beat and melody don't seem to belong.
4. Formentera What (Gareth Emery Remix) - 8/10 - This track would be rated a lot higher, but it seems to be mostly filler. The climax of the song is awesome, but like I said most of it is filler.
5. Ascent - 10/10 - This is the stuff...This track turns the feel of the album from the dark side, to the uplifting side. I absolutely adore this song, and I can't really tell you why, I just love it.
6. Perspective - 9/10 - As quickly as Ascent pulled you out of the dark, this track throws you right back in it. From the very beginning that beat is incredible, and once the melody comes in, you feel like you're being chased with how intense it sounds. I would easily give this one a ten, were it not muddled by the terrible vocals from the next track.
7. The Space We Are (Acapella) - 4/10 - I just don't understand why this track was put on the album. The vocals are horrific. The only saving grace it has is the melodies from the previous track.
8. I Am - 7/10 - Good track (especially after the last track), but the vocals leave something to be desired unfortunately.
9. Evergreen - 8/10 - This one feels a bit out of place with the slow section, but it makes for a nice break from the action. After that parts done though, it picks the pace right back up. Good track, but it's more of a filler than a showcase piece.
10. Firefly - 9/10 - This is the other song on the album I totally fell in love with on my first run through, though since then it's lost a bit of it's flare. The quiet piano part fits so dang well and really sets you up expecting something epic, and it doesn't disappoint.
11. What You Need (Hard Dub) - 10/10 - I don't like the vocals in this song, but you know what? It doesn't matter. I still give this one a 10 because the melody is completely out of this world. Nic Chagall is a genious and this track shows why.
12. Anthem - 9/10 - This song has a portion of it that most anybody would like. The beginning is my favorite part, with the pounding beat and great melody, but it's also got the slow guitar parts, with pretty good male vocals as well.
13. Whatever (Aly & Fila Remix) - 10/10 - Awesome awesome song. After my first few listens of the song I went out to search for anything I could get by Aly & Fila. Luckily the search turned me onto the Trance World series which has been a staple in my trance collection.
14. Why (Aly & Fila Remix) - 8/10 - Good song and the vocals sound pretty dang cool along with the melody, but not quite up to snuff with the rest of the amazing songs on this disc.
15. Day Seven - 7/10 - The track has a decent beat and a decent melody, but is really nothing special.
16. One More Night Out - 8/10 - Good ending track, very nicely blended with the piano pieces as well.
Overall Disc Rating 9/10 - I would have no problem giving this disc a perfect 10, were it not for "The Space We Are". That song is one of the worst I have heard, and it is such a buzzkill when you're on a straight listen through because the previous songs are so awesome. Then you get "The Space We Are, The Space We Were, The Space We Are, The Space We Were" and it just kills the whole attitude of the album! Anyway, getting off my soapbox, the disc besides that song is spectacular. Well done Armin!
The album gets a 5/5 easily. If it were not for the hole in the first disc and that one song in the second disc, this would be my favorite album. Unfortunately because of those flaws, it still remains Universal Religion Chapter 4.
State of Trance 2007 Poster Van Buuren is one of the biggest names in dance music and the current #3 DJ in the world (as voted by a DJ Mag poll). He continually pushes the bar with fresh trance sounds. This is the next chapter in his annual mix album series; a two-disc continuous mix of this year's hottest trance tunes from a stellar lineup. Alongside Armin's superior mixing skills, "A State Of Trance" is an inspiring and uplifting aural experience. The 2007 entry in Armin Van Buuren's State of Trance series takes awhile to get going, but eventually kicks in with the blissful epics that have made him one of the world's most popular DJs. On mix records, Van Buuren usually expresses the two sides of his DJ personality via the two-disc format; disc one is filled with frothy vocal trance, the other is populated with more progressive material. SoT 2007 stays true to form. This time out though, there's an obvious disparity in quality between the two. Van Buuren goes downright cheesy for his lighter disc one (called "on the beach"), and with a few fleeting exceptions like Kalopsia's "The Blizzard," it's pretty forgettable. However, the second, more progressive disc ("in the club") improves noticeably as AVB leads off with two self-produced bombs "Miserere" and "Rush Hour." It still has a high cheese level to be sure, but its excesses are cut with relative dark matter like the lovely mashup in the middle of the disc, consisting primarily of Reh Mundi's "Perspective" and Ronski Speed's "The Space We Are." As with contemporaries like DJ Tiësto, Van Buuren seems to believe he needs to be all things to all people, but his more commercial instincts are too pronounced here, leaving his more devoted fan base with only half a mix to enjoy. --Matthew Cooke
