Free Music Review: ASOT 2009: One of the best

I've always liked the title of Armin Van Buuren's yearly "A State of Trance" installments. It makes me wonder what interpretation of those four words is the most accurate: 1) A State of Trance being a parallel to the "state of the union" addresses given by presidents--meaning Armin is the president of trance!--with the album representing the year that was, or 2) A STATE of trance, meaning a literal Nation State where trance is the most important aspect, or even 3) A State of Trance where the title refers to a mental state: that euphoric transcendence that can come from a perfectly composed and executed piece of electronica (doubly so if combined with a dance floor at the right party). However the title is supposed to be read, I've found the last few releases from Armin to be particularly good. I've always thought A State of Trance 2007 was one of the all time best. Tracks like the opening "Light the Skies" and "What You Need [hard dub]" being amazingly good. 2008 was ok, but not quite as slick as 2007.
Now with ASOT 2009, Armin's back from the slightly inferior 2008 album with some pretty good tracks. This collection feels a bit cooler and more removed than 2006, with tracks that are quieter and a little more laid back--think ATB's Trilogy album. This is immediately noticeable in track #1 which sets the theme for the entire disk. "The Blizzard with Gåte" is a really great track that has a wonderful short-loop beat that is melancholic and driving at the same time. When it really spins up about half way through I found myself totally immersed and I didn't want the song to end.
#12 "Nothing At All" is a dance floor anthem that demands a response. This is a very solid danceable album, and I don't know where the people describing it as too slow are coming from.
Disk II is a bit more ambient than Disk I and is a bit slower, but it's great for parties and background music where you want something with a groove but not to overwhelm everything else.
Overall this is another very solid offering from Armin, and while it's not quite as good as ASOT 2007, it's very, very good and well worth buying if you're a trance fan.
