Free Music Notes for A State of Trance 2008Free Music Review: ASOT 2008: up there with 2006 for best ever Hit: 4 Stars
This is one fantastic collection of Trance music, spun by one of the best. The cover says it all; this is music that inspires transcendent thought... Ok so maybe that is over stating it a bit, but this is one of the best ASOT albums ever released by the talented Mr. van Buuren, and right up there with ASOT 2006 for the best ever.
There are some really interesting musical elements blended into these mixes. I especially liked the Asian instrumentation in track #2. As in all ASOT releases, the collection is separated into two CDs: THE BEACH and THE CLUB. They have distinctly different feels, with a bit more of an 'ambient' feel to THE BEACH and harder, more dance worthy tracks on THE CLUB. Those are broad generalizations I know, but typically I like THE BEACH cd better than THE CLUB. Not this time around; both are great and I can't choose a favorite which is a testament to how good this collection is.
Many of these songs are with-out-a-doubt beautiful. That's a tough trick for a trance track, as adjectives like 'intense,' or 'exciting' are far more common. But these songs are beautiful, and to me express all that's right in the world of trance. You can argue commercialization or lost roots, or too much house, techno, or what have you, but this collection eclipses all that. Just sit down and put it on some good speakers and let this stuff soak in. I guarantee you won't regret it.
Free Music Review: The New ASOT - Good For Beginners and Veterans Hit: 4 Stars
Once again Armin has done it. With each sucessive A State Of Trance album, Armin has created an aural atmosphere of trance music worth nodding your head to. I've listened to these trance mixes a few times so far, and I must say I am impressed with the overall array of trance contained on each disc. What I am saying is valid because I own each and every ASOT since 2004 and a few episodes from his continuing radio series under the same title. My favorite so far is 2005, with 2006 a close second. If you like any of those two, you WILL like this set.
This set is mature, enthralling, deep, euphoric, sexy and many other adjectives not worth mentioning beacuse the point is clear.
This is true trance music to the core.
The only qualm I have with this compiliation is that neither disc can be labeled as "On The Beach" or "In The Club". For some reason, to me (the seasoned trance veteran), the "Beach" album sounds like it could be played in a club and the "Club" album could possibly be played on a beach.
What I liked about ASOT's 2005-2007 is that you could differentiate easily whether the disc was club oriented or visa-versa.... not so much here. Either way, each disc in 2008 is worth several (A Lot Of) listens.

Free Music Review: Double Outstanding Vocal Trance CD Hit: 4 Stars
I've always liked Trance music even though I've listened to various styles of dance music over the years. After sampling Tiesto and PVD, I can say that I've turned into a AVBuuren fan after listening to State of Trance 2006. State of Trance 2008 however, is different to me. It has more vocal tracks and less of that energy on the 2006 CD. I gave this 2008 ASOT CD 4 starts because I found the songs could've been mixed in a non-stop fashion to enjoy the beautiful tracks selected by AVB. I understand this is a different CD than the 2006 version but non-stop AVB Trance is better than interrupted AVB Trance. AVB being one of the most popular DJ's could've just mixed this CD non-stop. I bought the 2008 version here as a download. Am not sure if the version sold by the record company is mixed in a non-stop fashion. Either way, I've given the 2008 4 stars. Either way, buy the 2008 2-CD set. You won't regret it!
Free Music Review: Excellent Compilation Hit: 4 Stars
When I first purchased this, I naturally scrolled through to find the best songs, and for the first few days I was disappointed. Then, I let it play from beginning to end, and now I listen to it all the time. Definitely worth it. You just always know why Armin picks the songs he does, once you give them a chance. I only give this 4 stars because it took some time for me to appreciate it. Only a 5 star CD would hit me immediately (like Trancematch did back in 2003).
Free Music Review: Armin's Best ASOT Since ASOT 2005 Hit: 4 Stars
His best since 2005. The previous two were very spotty, but were still decent mix sets. 2004 and 2005 ASOT definitely have been his best so far. This one is more consistent, and Disc 2 shines the most. I'm all ready for ASOT 2009!
Definitely check out: George Acosta, Christopher Lawrence, The Thrillseekers ("Nightmusic Vol. 3" - Best of '08), DJ Micro, Solarstone.
