Free Music Notes for 3 Years 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life of--Free Music Review: good CD! worth buying! Hit: 4 StarsI really want to know how you can have "way too much ernestness in your social message". As a previous reviewer complained in regards to this album. Is that like being "too positive"? is there such a thing? This album is a bit retro at this point in time which is why the 4 instead of 5 stars. the biggest shame is that they broke up. Their grooves are funky, thier message is clear and unpretentiously forward-thinking and hopeful. Their music offers encouragement and joy. And yes they are in ernest about it! thats why I like them so much!
Free Music Review: Rebel music for all Hit: 4 StarsFirst off, the lyrics on this album aren't anti-white. They're just expressing their pride to be of African heritage. I never heard anything by them saying something bad about white people. They are a righteous group and if you feel the same way then the music on this album will never grow old. It's full of feel good vibes and the beat on the remix to People Everyday is the dopest beat i've ever heard. If you have a conscious then you'll love this ablum and anything else by SPEECH or AD.
Free Music Review: Arrested Development's Debut Is Packed With Tunes That Work Hit: 4 StarsThis album is a mixture of rap, R&B, alternative, and reggae all rolled up into one terrific effort of a record.Speech's rhymes are filled with feeling, awareness, protest, anger, and even love. The thought-provoking "Mr. Wendel" is a good testimony on how we as Americans treat the homeless and down-on-their luck people. "Tennessee", filled with great beats and lyrics is a cry for equality. I am most impressed with "Children Play With Earth" and "People Everyday", which has a familiar Toyota jingle ring to it...actually Curtis Mayfield's song put to a call for help on the way some people are and can be. I really like this record a lot.
Free Music Review: Shows its age in 1999 Hit: 1 StarsTrack 4 sums up what's wrong with this CD: the band is totally self absorbed. They devote a track to a kind of live-show announcement, reeling off the band members' names and roles. The worst is delivered by Speech, who let's us know more than once that yes, he is the LEADER. Good for you, Speech. This is music that needed a few more months of fermentation, and a better producer. As is, it shows a pretty immature grasp of songwriting and way too much earnestness in its social message. It's late 1999 as I write this; if you haven't got this CD already, skip it. It's not worth getting at this point in music history.
Free Music Review: spiritual groove train beats Hit: 5 Starspeople are worried AD is racist? think again. this album speaks to the power of all people to rebel against institutions by banding together and finding their own grace. it questions the dogma of the church, the government, and american culture while celebrating through tribal caws and drums. i bought this album when it first came out in 92 and still listen to it at least once a week. you won't find a better conscious and driving album around (though they get some good competition from Rusted Root).
