Free Music Notes for Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm SectionFree Music Review: As close to "perfect" as recorded music gets! Hit: 5 Stars
The mythology that surrounds this session is that Art Pepper was totally strung out and had hocked his horn for dope when the Miles Davis group arrived in L.A. for a two week gig. Contemporary Records pres. gets horn out of hock, books one day of studio time, cleans up Mr. Pepper (buys him some more dope), and this album is recorded in a matter of hours. WOW! These cuts finally proved that Mr. Pepper was far more than just another "cool" west-coast bopper, as these are among the "hottest," most soulful musings ever to come out of an alto sax. ESSENTIAL!!!!
Free Music Review: "Finally what endures are the heart and the spirit" Hit: 5 Stars
Pepper played with passion, heart and spirit when he picked up a sax. This is one of the all time great Jazz albums and probably his best album ever. It is right up there with his "Among Friends" as just top notch melodic and lyrical jazz playing that will astound you with heart and feel. Inexplicably "Among Friends" is not on this site's album list but if you want to hear this Jazz dynamo get this one, you won't be disappointed.
Free Music Review: The Best Earlier Pepper Album Hit: 5 Stars
There are two periods of Art Pepper's music: before prison and after prison. Some people prefer one over the other, but I like both. This album was recorded before years in prison listening to John Coltrane and playing tenor sax altered his approach. This album is emotional, but the emotions are simply different. This is straight-ahead jazz masterfully played by all involved. Without a doubt one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time.
Free Music Review: The best of Art Pepper Hit: 5 Stars
For new jazz fans or long time Art Pepper fans this is a must-have album. With the backing of Davis' rhythm section Pepper finds his tightest recording. It would have been ideal if they could have mixed in some original material, but this collection of covers really shows Pepper's strength.
Free Music Review: Awesome Hit: 5 Stars
Here Art Pepper's saxophone playing is awesome. The musicians backing him up are awesome. The song selection is inspiring. All of these qualities can only add up to an awesome record. My favourite tracks are "Imagination", "Tin Tin Deo" and "Birks Works". A GEM!
