Free Music Notes for Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm SectionFree Music Review: art pepper at his best Hit: 5 Stars
I've been an Art Pepper fan for a long, long time. This is the session that I keep coming back to. Many decades have passed since the first time that I heard it, but despite all that time, it still sounds fresh. Buy this CD.
Free Music Review: extraordinary Hit: 5 Stars
I came across this title in one of Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch novels and am grateful I checked it out and discovered that this was real and not fiction. Pepper's work on the sax is truly extraordinary.
Free Music Review: Excellent product Hit: 5 Stars
This is an excellent CD. I purchased it for my husband and he really enjoys it.
Free Music Review: The Guy Knows How To Play! Hit: 4 Stars
I've been aware of the name Art Pepper only I never bought any of his stuff. Which many people thought was odd because I play the sax myself. So I thought it would be a good idea to buy something by Pepper. Who knows, I could end up loving the way he plays. Well, guess what? I think he plays great! And this album proves it! The REAL reason I bought this album was due to the personnel. The song selection didn't really grab my attention. But I am a big Cole Porter fan. So the fact they play "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" didn't hurt. And wait to you hear HOW they play it! What I was really anxious to hear was their arrangement of "Jazz Me Blues". I myself have ONLY heard New Orleans jazz bands play it. So I wanted to hear what Pepper would do with the song. The result: while it doesn't sound bad,I just couldn't shake the feeling that New Orleans band should just play the song. If you really want to hear the group swing you have to hear Pepper's "Straight Life"! I can't find the right words to describe what you're missing. Maybe after you hear it you can tell me the right words to use to describe how great it is. BUY IT! NOW!
Free Music Review: East Coast Hard Bop meets West Coast Cool in 1957 Hit: 4 Stars
I think this is a great record, and all the musicians are in good form. My only wish is that Art had opened up a bit more on the blues numbers. He may have been a bit intimidated by "The Rhythm Section" (who wouldn't be?) and played it safe.
Having said that, I heartily recommend this music to anyone who loves good jazz and especially those interested in the various sub-genres like hard bop vs cool. So, 1 start off for the somwehat conservative solos, but 4 stars ain't bad!
