I am a fan of Art Pepper and I think he was a tremendous saxophone player who truly mastered the instrument. However, his style is inexperienced and undeveloped on this album. One can literally hear the hesitation in the notes, the shallow breathing techinques and the general inhibition which pervades the album. This album made Pepper "big" because he played with Red Garland and Mile's other greats. But the best Pepper is the Pepper of '70's and '80's, when Pepper was strong, confident, emotional, and blew that horn like it was a living beast. Try "Village Vanguard," "Art Pepper Today" or "Arthur's Blues." THESE are the albums that do the master justice. |
