Free Music Review: How to Ruin a String Quartet?

Wait! Don't reach for your gun! That was a joke, ha ha! But like many provocative jokes, there's a wicked gleam of seriousness in it. Few of the greatest composers have also written piano quintets of the same profundity as their quartets. (Yes, yes, that's subjective, of course.) Beethoven didn't; Schubert did. Possibly it's the temptation of too much brilliance in the pianism; possibly it's the challenging of either integrating or treating as adversaries the hammers and the bows. Schumann did it halfway. His 'Piano Quintet in E flat minor' is at least a candidate for being his most affective, expressive chamber composition, but only the first two movements; the 3rd and 4th movements veer toward mere rhetorical flashiness. Brahms did it and more; his 'Piano Quintet in F minor' is as inspired a work as any of his quartets and ranks with his Sextet and Clarinet Quintet as the apogee of his chamber music.

If you took my snarky joke to refer to the musicians - the four string players and one keyboardist - then it would be utterly false. The Artemis Quartet sounds better on this CD than I've ever heard them sound precisely because of their affinity for the pianism of Leif Ove Andsnes. The sound recording quality is perhaps part of the impression, but I hear a really tasty sense of ensemble in the Schumann, a synergy particularly between cellist Eckart Runge and the left hand of Andsnes. This is, for better or worse, a lucid post-romantic performance of the most Romantic composer of all. The 1st movement Allegro Brillante is too fast; it loses its plangency. But the other movements blossom under Andsnes's 'vocal' touch. I have three CDs of this quintet, and ironically Andsnes seems most clearly superior to the other pianists in the flashy 4th movement, where his fluid passages of 'little notes' simply sound more musical than merely dextrous.

The Brahms Quintet is a more challenging task for interpretation, I suspect, than the Schumann. Here I think Artemis and Andsnes under-interpret it, playing passage by passage very craftily yet never seeming to assemble the work into a potent experience. The final product is pallid in comparison to the sublime performance by the ensemble La Gaia Scienza, with Federica Valli playing an Erard pianoforte. But these are 'shortcomings' at a very high level. Unless you want only one ultimate performance of the Brahms, which to my ears would be that of La Gaia Scienza, you will certainly get five stars worth of musical pleasure from this CD.
