Eighteen Dollars!!!! For all the Beethoven sonatas?? "They said it couldn't be done", to quote an ancient commercial sales pitch. Well, here are the famous Schnabel recordings that have been available for the last 70 years. There's a good reason for their longevity on the shelves: the performances are unique in approach. One might accuse Schnabel of rushing, which he does, but somehow he always brings the rushed phrase back into line. If you listen to the fugue of the Hammerklavier Op. 106, you find that many runs tend to gallop slightly ahead of themselves, yet always end in the right place. Once the modern day listener gets used to this quirk of Schnabel's the sonatas reveal themselves in ways that no longer happen in recorded performances.
The sound quality will be a problem for those wanting to hear a modern German Steinway in 5.1 surround. The trouble is I can't think of any modern performances that would come off as well had they been recorded in the mid 30s with its minimaly recorded high frequencies. Its also interesting to note that these recordings were made on Bechstein pianos and thus have a very different quality than most renderings. That IS audible. I've just finished listening to some astonishing piano recordings from 1903-4. They have been refurbished via computer and come off strikingly well. So the 1930s sound is just fine with me. So many new recordings have artificial ambience added to them that it sort of evens the playing field in my estimation.
Schnabel is always able to find not only the serious side of Beethoven, but has a special way with the lighter moments in the sonatas such as Op 31 #3. That has real charm.
I'll leave it to you to decide whether you can spare this sum of money for what has always been considered one of the seminal creations on 78s, LPs, cheap LPs, expensive CDs and now ridiculously (and wonderfully) priced CDs! They may come in paper, but remember that's bio-degradable.
