Free Music Notes for An Ocean Between UsFree Music Review: As I Lay Dying . . . . metalcore's best . . . . but . . . . Hit: 4 StarsThe music on this album is fantastic. In my review on As Blood Runs Black I said: "Some artists are such amazing musicians that they can screw originality and they can play other people's original ideas twice as well as the original artist. This is what As Blood Runs Blacks does for the first 4 songs." This is basically what As I Lay does, except for the entire frickin' album! There isn't a song on the entire album that I don't like. I felt the same thing about August Burns Red. Both albums are amazing at keeping my interest for the entire album. Their lyrics are also very good. So, with all the praise i have given As I Lay Dying, what is wrong with this album?? My problem is that you can not figure out what in the world Tim Lambesis is saying. What the vocalists say is very important to me, and it frustrates me i can only understand the singer. The cool thing about August Burns Red is you can understand most of lyrics, and even if you can't there is no way you can't understand what he's screaming during breakdowns, which happens probably two times a song.
So, it's an excellent album. Music good. Musicianship good. Percussionist good. It all adds up to 10/10 music. But the screamer kind of dropped my opinion of the album to 4 stars out of 5 stars. Lambesis does have a good scream and excellent tone, but his enunciation is terrible, what he says means absolutely nothing to me because I can't understand what he is saying.
But, all in all, if you like Metalcore this CD is a must have for your collection.
Free Music Review: Pushing Closer to Metal, and further away from Metal-core Hit: 5 StarsThis album simply rocks!!! I am mostly into Metal, like Opeth, Nevermore, Shadows Fall, Wintersun, Amon Amarth, to name a few, but I bought this album after being somewhat disappointed with SAS. I was unsure whether it would be more of the same, or more Metal. It is definitely more Metal, with lots of thrash influences sticking out here, there, and everywhere. 6 guitar solos! And good ones at that. The lyrics are very uplifting, despite the aggressive nature of this music. I hope they continue this progression toward full-on metal. If you can, see them live, they kick!!!
Free Music Review: still awesome Hit: 5 StarsI don't like this album much as the last two but is still a awesome heavy album. Many people don't like metalcore cause they simply just called it hardcore music and not metal at all but as i lay dying is a metalcore band that's not just "hardcore".This album is a more thrash metal album with death metal sounds but i don't like thrash but still okay,i mean this is not like atreyu or avenged sevenfold who went mainstream those bands were bands that you can call hardcore eventough a7x say they just play metal, but whatever as i lay dying is a band that you can call METAL!This album like i said is more thrash and way more clean vocals if you liked their first three albums yeah you might like this one just not as good and heavy like frail words collapse. This band has always had death metal sounds and still with this one,so i say give it a try it just makes me mad that many bands go more thrashy but let's see what we can expect for their next album.
Free Music Review: what a big mistake! Hit: 1 StarsAs I Lay Dying has to be one of the biggest leading Metalcore acts that America has to offer, but this cd greatly disappointed me. it was hard for me just to listen to the whole entire cd... i am glad i downloaded it when it leaked because this is clearly NOT worth the money. and my main complaint is that i can not stand the back up vocals in this cd for anything... the other guy was so much better than him, and i actually loved his vocals on Shadows Are Security, and that guy just had to leave... this is completely unforgivable and uncalled for... i was anticipating the cd so much but it has failed all expectations... if your a huge fan of the past 2 cds, you will surely be disappointed!
Free Music Review: Their 4th and most powerful album to date Hit: 5 StarsChristian-metal band As I Lay Dying has released their 4th and most powerful album to date, "An Ocean Between Us". The CD in its entirety exhibits intelligent lyrics, written by singer and co-founding band member Tim Lambesis, and hardcore riffs and drums. Other co-founding member, Jordan Mancino, shreds his double-bass pedal action, creating an entire album of heavy breakdowns. The title track reigns supreme on this album, along with an engaging chorus to sing out loud to. The band takes a bit of a slower turn with "I Never Wanted", but it all the same is just as intense as any other song on the album. The last track, "This Is Who We Are," ends with an intriguing and melodious piano piece, which caps off the record. During the making of this album, the band acquired a new bassist, Josh Gilbert. Gilbert recorded the clean vocals on the record, which constituted for more of the lyrics this time around than most prior As I Lay Dying records. More clean vocals, however, does nothing whatsoever to take away from the greatness that this album contains. All previous fans will not be disappointed with this feat.
