Free Music Review: Metalcore record of the year

"Shadows Are Security" had probably one of the biggest hypes I've seen for a metal or hardcore record for sometime surrounding it's release. Everyone expected this one to be golden, and that the band would further solidify their place at the top of today's metalcore scene. When I finally got my hands on a copy of the album, I can only say I was more than pleased. While in my opinion "Frail Words Collapse" was a better record, there's no denying that "Shadows Are Security" is easily one of the best metal or hardcore records released in sometime, and is more than a suitable follow up to the previous album.
First off it should be noted that AILD has had a lot of member changes between the last record and this one, mainly being the exit of primary music writer, and guitar player Evan White. I was really worried that this would hurt the band. Evan's guitar work on the last album was excellent, and it would be truly hard shoes to fill for any incoming guitarists. However Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa more than answer the challenge. Their riffs are just as technical and engaging as the last record, and their relationship really makes for some amazing songs like "Meaning In Tragedy" and "The Truth Of My Perception". I still think Jordan Mancino is an extremely gifted drummer, despite what some have written about him, and his work on this album is easily above what he did on FWC. Tim Lambesis gives an excellent vocal performance, although not much has changed since the last record; He still has his demonically powerful rasp. However this time around the band has mixed in a lot (well I shouldn't say a lot, but a little) more clean singing, coming from newly acquired bassist Clint Norris. Songs like "Confined" and "Through Struggle" benefit from his vocal performance. Not to worry though, because the majority of the record is just as heavy as it's predecessor. Some may think that after hearing the first single "Confined", that the album is just filled up with clean singing, which is entirely untrue. Pieces like "Losing Sight" and "Empty Hearts" will prove to any skeptics that the band is still capable of pummeling any who doubt them. There's plenty of breakdowns and heavy parts that AILD has always been known for, and that's what really makes the album credible. Production is miles ahead of what is was on the last cd, which makes the sound even tighter and more appealing to listeners. They didn't sell out, or change up their style, they stuck to what they knew best, and made one amazing album that fully captures everything this band has to offer. I don't really have anything to complain about on this one.
To my surprise this album has gotten a lot of mixed reviews. However it seems to me that most of these reviews are coming from people who haven't listened to the band before. If you like screamo or emo, or anything else that is commonly linked to hardcore now adays, then make no mistake, this isn't for you. This is an album that AILD made for their fans. It's not going to win anyone over who didn't like the last record, but anyone who has heard the band before is going to fall in love with this cd exactly the way they did with the last one. There's so much that has been improved upon on this recording, that it's almost an insult to say this album is an unsuccessful effort.
It's hard to follow an album like "Frail Words Collapse", but AILD more than did that with "Shadows Are Security". In essence, if you liked the first cd, then there's no reason not to buy this one. It's just as crushing, and yet still has a beautiful feeling to it. It's not too bogged down by melody or experimentation, and that's what makes it really shine. If you want one of the best straight forward metalcore records you're going to hear this year, then you need not look any further than AILD's "Shadows Are Security". I guarantee no disappointments.
