Free Music Review: A Simpson makes good music? Who woulda thunk it?
Hit: 5 Stars

A long time ago, in a land far far away, there lived a beautiful, if not bright, young girl named Jessica. Her father, Joe was a minister who gave up his job to help his daughter become a pop singing sensation. Jessica went on to release three successful teen pop albums, "Sweet Kisses", "Irrisistable", and "In This Skin", and marry pop star Nick Lachey. And she also became the poster girl for dumb blondes with her equally dumb show, "Newlyweds". But unknown to the masses, young Jessica had a younger sister. This younger sister also had musical aspirations, but had always been pushed aside in favor of her prettier, older, dumber sister. Finally, 5 years after her sister found success, the younger sister, Ashlee, released her debut, "Autobiography". Those expecting an album like those of her older sister's were severely dissapointed. But apparently that wasn't very many, and Autobiography went on to debut at #1 and has sold 1 million copies to date. Now, after that equally long and stupid introduction, let's begin the real review.
Cue the electric guitar chords. Dada dundundun Dada dundundun. Cue the dark, breathy vocals. "You think you know me, word on the street is that you do, you want my history, what others tell you won't be true." Those are the words that open "Autobiography" (the song and the album). This song certainly is an interesting one. The lyrics, melody, and vocals aren't anything new or original, yet they work very well. After the first verse Ashlee switches from breathy to gritty and screams/ sings "Got stains on my T-SHIRT! And I'm the biggest FLIRT! Right now I'm solo but that will be changing eventually, oh, Got bruises on MY HEART! And sometimes I GET DARK! If you want my auto, want my autobiography, baby just ask me." Which is a pretty damn spiffy chorus. The first song draws you in more than any of Jessica's big, gooey, dumb pop fluff and from listening to the bridge, you know you're in for an intense, maybe even scary ride: "I'm a bad-ass girl in this messed up world! I'm a sexy girl in a crazy world! I'm a simple girl in a complex world! A nasty girl you wanna get with me! You wanna mess with me!" Perhaps Ashlee should take some anger management classes. The amount of pure ferocity she packs in one 3:30 song is a little strange. But on to the next song.
More guitar chords. But light and summery, not dark and scary. "On a Monday, I am waiting, by Tuesday, I am fading, and by Wednesday I can't sleep". Unlike her sister, Ashlee obviously knows the days of the week. The infamous first single, this would go on to become my song of the summer, go to #1 on at least 150000 different charts, blah blah blah. I like it. Ashlee shows off her powerful vocals on the chorus: seems like I can finally rest my head on something real, I like the way that feels, it's as if you know me better than I ever knew myself, I love how you can tell, all the pieces, pieces, pieces of me". Awww, how sweet. Although I shudder to think what her sister would do with a song like this: "Oh baby baby, it feels like I'm resting my rather light head on something that's actually real, that's cool". My stomach hurts.
"Love Me For Me" is an interesting little rock ditty. "It's been! Three days! You're comin' round here like you know me! Your stuff! At my place! Next thing you know you'll be using my toothpaste!" Ashlee sure is defensive about her dental care products. The song is one of the better ones on the disc, with a catchy chorus and fun, sing-a-long verses. Also, it should make the dentists very happy.
And we're back to the guitar chords. Dundundundun dundundundun. "I was six years old when my parent went away, I was stuck inside a broken life I couldn't wish away". Enter the second single, "Shadow". The song chronicles the unhappy situation Jessica's fame put Ashlee in. Though it's a bit cheesey, it's a great song with an excellent chorus: "I was livin in the shadow, of someone else's dream, trying to find a hand to hold, but every touch felt cold to me". It's a good look inside the mind of a famous sibling.
Now let's visit the most touching and emotional song on the album, "Undiscovered". I like this song very very much, as Ashlee clearly put a lot of effort into it, and it shows. "When I'm in the dark and all alone, dreaming that you'll walk right through my door, it's there and I know my heart is whole. There's a million reasons why I cry, hold my covers tight and close my eyes, cause I don't wanna be alone". Unlike "Shadow", the painful emotion of this song is a bit more subtle, which makes it a better song. At the end of this song I find myself wanting to give Ashlee a big hug because she sounds so damn sad. "Don't walk away, don't walk away, don't walk away, don't walk away". She really does sound like her heart was breaking, and damnit, she's breaking mine.
But my favorite song on the album has to be "Lala". It's the most outwardly rocking, the most fun, and surprisingly, the sexual song of the album. Daddy Joe must have flipped when he heard this one, and I'm sure "Virgin until marriage" Jessica must of blushed a bit too. Here's a sample: "You make me wanna lala, in the kitchen on the floor, I'll be your french maid, when I meet you at the door, I'm like an alley cat, drink the milk up I want more, You make me wanna, You make me wanna scream". Obviously this will go over most young childrens' minds but for us teens it's a nice look inside the dirty mind of the bad Simpson sister. Now excuse me while I shoot myself for that ridiculously stupid line.
Despite all the bad hype about famous younger siblings, "Autobiography" is pretty damn good. It's one of the best to come out this year, and you're certainly better off buying it then any of Jessica's albums. So get out of the shadow, make some lala, and put the pieces of Ashlee together in her Autobiography. God, that was dumb.

Autobiography Poster

UK pressing of the teen-popstar's #1 debut album includes two bonus tracks, 'Harder Everyday' (international (not U.S.) bonus track) & 'Sorry' (UK bonus track). Geffen,
You hear a lot of echoes throughout Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography, but her big-eyed, bright-smiled sister Jessica isn't behind a one of them. That'll come as no surprise to fans and anyone who has caught the "darker" Simpson sister on MTV, which is responsible for hurtling the hard-edged "Pieces of Me" onto radio playlists across the country and creating a mini frenzy over this CD's content. Stoking the gossip-fueled flames is track three, "Shadow." On it, 19-year-old Ashlee spills her childhood resentment over her sister's attention-gulping career, ending up on a conciliatory note that has the surprising effect of making the Simpson divas' drama seem believable ("Everything's cool now?and the past is in the past," she sings). But serious music fans ought not to dilly-dally with the celeb stuff and dive right in, because this disc dishes up more than a lot of us bargained for. "LaLa" revs up the unsuspecting by way of out-and-out lustiness, "Love for Me" lays on the lovelorn angst thick, and the title track is a take-no-prisoners, love-me-or-leave-me rock anthem. Rippling throughout are cunningly malleable vocals, bending here for a kittenish Gwen Stefani effect, stretching there to sound Christina Aguilera-cathartic. Sweeter moments call to mind the indie sensibilities of Jill Sobule. More than others of her reality-show insta-star ilk, Ashlee Simpson's is an autobiography that shouts, "bring on the sequel." --Tammy La Gorce
