Free Music Notes for Phoenix

Free Music Review: Close your eyes - it's 1984 - it's Asia's 3rd album...
Hit: 5 Stars

Asia is back featuring the original 4 members from the first two albums. The new studio release, Phoenix, is like a shocking dive back in time to 'fantasy music' heaven. It literally sounds like it belongs in 1984 as the perfect followup to 'Alpha'. The production style, raw playing, great punchy hooks all over the place intertwined with just a shade more progressive flair than either of the first 2 albums just force you back to the early 80's - whether you want to go along for the ride or not! Several of the songs are captivating with their unexpected musical depth, progressive bent and flashy allure.

oh yeah - and I'm probably the only one on the planet to notice, but some kind engineer had the infinite taste to bathe everything with just the right touch of auto-tune so we FINALLY get to hear John Wetton hit EVERY SINGLE NOTE dead on-key! (well, at least the sustained notes where it matters, anyway).

it's real, it's back, it's shockingly brilliant. it's Asia's Phoenix!!!

Free Music Review: bought this along with rush live S&A; Asia wins out by a longshot
Hit: 5 Stars

I actually had low expectations after 23 years, but to my surprise this is absolutely phenomenal! The mix is superb, the sound engineer did an amazing job, and this just f...ing sounds great.. What a waste not putting out this music over the last 23 years. The same can not be said to the latest Rush live cd, which is the complete opposite: horrendous sound quality, the mix is poor, muddy, not sure what the sound board was doing those 2 nights..
back to Asia: from the first licks of the first tracks, it just grooves.. and flows all the way to Wettons seeming sentimental last song on the disc (which I predict will become a new Asia anthem and possible and unfortunately a "pop" hit
the musicianship is impeccable...the rhythm section is right on...
I only wished all new rock/ indie rock cds produced in the modern era sounded this good...
this is what my martin logan speakers were made for..
look forward to the upcoming tour...

Free Music Review: Fantastic
Hit: 5 Stars

These guys (Wetton, Downes, Palmer, Howe) have not released an album as "Asia" since 1983's "Alpha" (the follow-up, "Astra," was released without the participation of Howe). Remarkably, Phoenix, builds upon the outstanding debut, "Asia", and it's mediocre follow-up, "Alpha," and leaves behind the excess and vacuousness of their third, and previously final, album "Astra." Putting aside the ongoing Payne vs. Wetton debate, this is an extraordinary album. Admittedly, Payne/Asia's last album, "Silent Nation," was also fantastic, but lacked the depth of this release. "Phoenix" boasts some classic Asia sounds, e.g., "Never Again" and "Alibis" could have come off of either "Asia" or "Alpha," but also reveals a maturity and depth not previously seen in songs such as "Orchard of Mines" and "An Extraordinary Life." If you have a fondness for '80s Asia, I would classify this as a "don't miss" release. You won't be disappointed.

Free Music Review: Excellent Reunion
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a fan of the group since I was little. My Mom bought the first album and Alpha on LP and we listened to them a lot. I've followed Wetton over the years and was excited when he and Downes started recording albums together. I was hopeful for a full-on reunion but wasn't holding my breath. When I read that this album was coming out I knew I wouldn't be disappointed.

Phoenix is a great CD that is as good as the originals. I won't do a song by song review here, but the entire album is strong. I would have to say that, "An Extraordinary Life," is the best song on here. I've already purchased this album four times; one for me, one for my best friend, one for my Dad, and of course one for my Mom. Stuff like this doesn't happen all the time, so if you're a fan of the original group, savor this moment and enjoy the new album...you won't be disappointed!

Free Music Review: Phoenix - The True Nature Of Asia
Hit: 5 Stars

Connoisseurs would state a good bottle of wine as perfectly aged, exquisite and well refined. So does Phoenix - true, profound and mature Asia music for the true, profound and mature Asia fan. An end result of the original band in it's best nature after 25 years. Being reunited and still haven't changed not one bit is a total bore. It would end up being reminisced. Phoenix might not achieve the grandeur of the eponymous debut album and Alpha, but to the purist and devoted Asia fan, it is magnificently PERFECT, if I may say so. I believe the critics are not in a zen state of mind if they think Phoenix is just too shallow. Most have anticipated and waited for Phoenix to arrive and unfortunately not all were satisfied of it's presence. That's just being hypocritical. They just don't get it and never will. Keep it clean and clear, the band is on the right focus path. Well done!
