Traffic on Highway 61 ain't what it used to be, what with HOB and Alligator limos whisking by with tinted windows rolled up tight and crystal-clear guitars on the stereo. Then along comes Fat Possum in its retooled '48 Ford pick-up, chug-a-lugging on two good cylinders and barely a memory of A/C. Only they can hear Asie Payton pickin' and playin' on his front porch to the beat of a broken-down washing machine. Before he died, the reluctant Payton laid down some raw-as-dirt demos and one session with his friend Sam Carr. Then these yung-uns at Fat Possum overdubbed some heavy stuff on a few tracks. The result could have been garbage, too raw for modern ears or too grunge for blues afficionados. But when you listen, what you hear is a legacy. The overdubbed tracks are killer-cool and signal there is no end to the blues. The demo tracks are almost heartbreaking in their aloneness. And "Nobody But You" should go down as a classic. Not many people will buy this CD. But those who do will get years of pleasure and one of those rare glimpses of mortality that will be picked up by a future generation looking for authenticity in an age swamped by gimmicks. Tommy Johnson became a legend on about as much recorded and raw output as Asie Payton. Here's hoping the gods of resurrection will smile upon Asie as well.
