Free Music Notes for Willie and the WheelFree Music Review: Texas Swing Meets Rockola Hit: 4 Stars
This CD is one that will either set your feet dancing to the music immediately as well as bring a smile to your face at the wry humor within, or leave you thinking that your in Texas listening to a hip Bob Wills album.
Asleep at the Wheel is a tight band, the music is fresh, and Willie Nelson is in great jazzy vocal form, both with voice and guitar.
However, after sharing this CD with other people who decidedly are NOT fans of Willie, country music or Texas swing, and having them listen to it a second or third time, this CD's enthusiasm and verve grew on them. They came away happy, amused and liking the music on this CD.
Give it a try; it's worth the price of admission.
Free Music Review: What A Pair! Hit: 4 Stars
Asleep at the Wheel and Willie aren't pushing to create an effect - this is relaxed country swing. Pros making what they do look easy. If you are looking for a high-concept, over-produced set, this isn't it. This album is as relaxed as sitting on the porch with a frosty glass.
Track 3 gives you a perfect sample of the attitude of the entire CD. If you like that one, you're going to like all of it.
Free Music Review: willie and the wheel is a good listen Hit: 4 Stars
Willie and the wheel is a good listen..Asleep At The Wheel is a natural backup for the vocal phrasing and guitar licks that Willie is known for..There is a seamless quality to the pedal steel and Willies vocal work..Early on in the listen it becomes obivious that Willie can work with this group as if he had been with them from the beginning. It made me smile.
Free Music Review: Sleepwalkin The Album Over You.... Hit: 3 Stars
I'm a big fan of Willie, even more so for The Wheel, but this album just left me cold. Willie seems to be sleepwalking over his vocals, almost to the point where he seems bored! I KNOW the man's pushing 80, but his vocals, although still strong, seemed somewhat forced. Asleep At The Wheel, just seem along for the ride, functioning mainly as Willie's backup band! Their instrumentals are tight, and superb as ever, but can't we just have maybe 1 or 2 songs with The Wheel cooking on it's own? ....without Willie?? Where's the band jammin' on it's own?? How about a number with Ray Benson's superb vocal...without Willie?? Maybe a 2 CD set would've made this the event what it was meant to be- Willie by himself, the Wheel by themselves, a cookin instrumental or two, and THEN, together, Willie & The Wheel! Good album, certainly NOT a disappointment, but it left me shaking my head! Could've been a better album, by far!!
Free Music Review: Willie needs more help from the Wheel Hit: 3 Stars
The strong voice of Ray Benson could have been used more on this CD. The band was nothing more than back up for Willie. Somewhat disappointed in this CD, the songs are really old, I didn't recognize them. My folks may have enjoyed this more than me, but she's 80 and he's gone.
