Free Music Notes for Tango: Zero Hour

Free Music Review: Probably my favorite recording of all time.
Hit: 5 Stars

Aurally stunning from start to finish, this album isn't "easy listening" but is best experienced in total immersion. That said, it's surprisingly accessible, both smooth and mind-bending, a rollercoaster ride of emotions that somehow draws back from the brink at the very moment you think it's going to tip over into schmaltz. It takes a genius like Piazzolla to make music this dramatic without being maudlin. Like Mahler's 9th, it altered my views of dissonance and harmony forever. I know of no recording quite like it.

A few Piazzolla fans may prefer his more straightforward works, but I believe that he himself pronounced it his best recording ever. Recordings like "La Camorra..." succeed with a somewhat more rough and impromptu sound; on this record Piazolla and band aim for perfection... and achieve it.

Free Music Review: Take a deep breath...Listen...
Hit: 5 Stars

There is nothing I can use to describe the beauty of this music. Words are absolutely redundant - this music is a cure, a remedy.

Free Music Review: A legend's legendary recording.

I've had a passing acquaintance with Astor Piazzolla's work throughout my 9 years as a community radio programmer. When I encountered the re-issue of his "Tango: Zero Hour" in our station's new bin, I thought I'd check it out. [Insert Argentinian term for "wow" here.] When an artist who has been at the top of his genre for decades says "this is my finest record ever," I listen. Produced by Kip Hanrahan, this record lays bare the intensity and beauty of tango in a stunning manner. This record has, in some subtle way, changed the way I hear music. A true masterpiece!

Nuevo tanguero Astor Piazzolla's legacy continues to thrive even now, years after his death. Nonesuch has re-released Tango: Zero Hour, which is without doubt Piazzolla's finest moment. If you have not heard Piazzolla, this is the place to start. His bandoneon playing was never better; his New Tango Quintet was at its peak; and this collection of old and new songs is like a greatest hits album with impeccable sound and dynamic arrangements. Hats off to original producer Kip Hanrahan for masterminding the original release and to Nonesuch for reviving it.
