Free Music Review: The template for the modern melodic death metal

Not too many bands can reunite around a 13 year old album and have it be as crushing as anything contemporary to that time. ATG proved to do just that, spending the summer of 2008 on a reunion tour based largely on the popularity of this album.
This album provided the template for which most, if not all, modern melodic death metal is based. Without this album there wouldn't be many of the melodeath metal bands that subsequently came out afterwards, nor would there be the whole NWOAHM movement on the opposite side of the Atlantic. This album was well ahead of its time and the only thing regrettable about it is that the band who released it broke up soon after it was put out. I can't fathom what ATG may have done afterwards, though I'd like to imagine it as a more metal/less punk version of Disfear, and even then that's still pretty B.A.
The title track is great, but all of the tracks on this album deliver a shot in the arm like drinking 15 glasses of coffee at once. The bonuses are pretty cool too and even features a cover of Slayer's "Captor of Sin." That in itself is pretty rad.
I recommend this album to all fans of metal as well as any music fan that wants to know what GOOD metal should sound like.

2002 reissue of the Swedish death metal act's 1995 album with new artwork, liner notes & includes six bonus tracks 'Legion' (Slaughterlord cover), 'The Dying' (previously unreleased track from Slaughter of the Soul sessions), 'Captor of Sin (Slayer cover)After riding the coattails of their local heroes Entombed for the first half of the 1990s, Gothenburg, Sweden's groovy At the Gates hit full racing power in 1995. For a brief while, the Slaughter of the Soul release almost single-handedly supported the flagging death metal scene, ushering in a second wave of metal energy that lives today in bands like the Haunted, which features ex-members of At the Gates. While respectful of the religious intensity of labelmates Morbid Angel and Carcass, At the Gates was a slightly more domesticated beast. Weaving melodic textures into its assault, the band slowed its tempo to something less diabolical, winning over large audiences who craved metallic intensity but were turned off by the Satanism and blood worship of the outfit's contemporaries. Sadly, the band broke up in 1996, but its deeply infused union of death metal, melody, and boogie remain distinctive several years later, even overshadowing the sparser but similar efforts by the Haunted. Six bonus tracks on this reissue of Slaughter of the Soul--including frantic 1995 demo tracks and cover songs from Slaughter Lord and Slayer--sweeten the pot while presenting At the Gates at its pinnacle. --Ian Christe
