Free Music Review: Interesting New Material
Hit: 5 Stars

While not my favorite disk of his work, John Frusciante's Ataxia-Automatic Writing is still impressive and eclectic.

Free Music Review: Talk about spacing out
Hit: 4 Stars

Disc two out of the proposed six disc set that John's going to release before year's end and man its just totally amazing. This is Ataxia, John's collaboration with bassist Joe Lally of Fugazi and drummer Josh Klinghoffer of Bicycle Thief. The bass is pretty standard and repetitive with Joe playing mostly one riff throughout each song. The riffs are still cool and people need to shuttup because this is not a bass album but rather an album where a talented bass player takes a backseat to John. Josh does a lot of evolving drumming and pulls out some good stuff while laying down an awesome backbeat. John though, has finally returned to big powerful guitar playing with some of the strongest soloing I've heard from him since Californication. Unlike other recent releases (the Chilis By The Way) John freaks out and does some really cool stuff. This is in no way insulting to By The Way as it is an excellent album where John just did some different guitar playing that wasn't as flashy. It's interesting to point out that all three members are credited for vocals but the specific tracks on which they're singing isn't revealed so you can never be totally positive as to who's sining unless it's a song like "The Sides" where it is clearly John on lead vocals. Onto the track by track review of this 45 minute album which contains 5 count em 5 songs each tracking in at an average of 9 minutes.

1.Dust-Starts out slow with a rocking bass line that soon has crazy effects ridden guitar work over it. John uses his guitar and synthesizer in unison to create truly weird beautiful sounds on this song. At one point, during one of his many crazy fills/solo his guitar sounds like computer bleeps and blasts of napalm His vocals go from screeching screaming to soft crooning.
2.Another-Cool bongos over a softer guitar pattern coupled with some cool bass playing. Has some cool falsetto singing possibly by Josh Klinghoffer. Never really amazed me into loving this song
3.The Sides-This and Dust are reason enough to buy this album. It starts out with what sounds like a techno drumbeat but evolves into the most rocking song on this album. Throughout three different solos, John shows three different eras of his guitar playing. One sounds like a solo you'd hear on Californication and another sounds like a By The Way solo. The third and final though, sounds like John 15 years ago which is coincidently how he plays live yet generally not in the studio. Really strong song. Inspite of being 7 minutes long, I think it could realistically become a single. Maybe that's just wishful thinking.
4.Addition-Second longest song on the album clocking in at 10 minutes+. It rocks out with more weirdly timed guitar freakouts that will take you by surprise and will most likely shock you.
5.Montreal-Lyrics seem odd to me. Obviously something about Montreal but really confusing but yet again the lyrics are pretty unimportant throughout the album compared to the music. This song has a real bluesy feel to it at parts but since it's John there's no way he's going to do any form of music straight up the way you'd expect it. Song ends at about 8:30 but goes until 12 minutes because of crazy bleeps and various other noises that John sucks outta his guitar.

Overall, it's a good experimental piece of music. The songs don't follow a definite structure and sound as though they geniusly were thought up on the spot. Don't get this unless you really like John Frusciante as a guitar or really dig experimental music like say Pink Floyd, Tool, PIL (who John claims was a huge inspiration for this record) or the Mars Volta. If you in general love innovative guitar work, then pick this up. It's a great piece of art that really shows John's soul much like any of his other work. Like anything else by John, it is just absolutely beautiful and you can just feel the blood, sweat, and tears that went into making this record jsut by listening to it. Buy it.

Free Music Review: a great album and an amazing project
Hit: 4 Stars

first of all i'm really 17 not 13. but this album shows that john is capable of giving the unexpected side of him a good ear to the public. the next half of ataxia should come this year. this record is why i started to play bass .i can play the bass for the whole album.

Dust-cool bass intro and great solos, some of the best john has ever produced.
Another-took a while for this song to grow on me, but its simple without being boring and the vocals give the song real spirit.
The Sides-the first song i heard from the album and its the best along with dust. i love all solos and those intro drums sound catchy.
Addition-i wondedred if theres a guitar in this song.but anayway its very dramatic but also has a good output of synth. the outro drums are the same for 'a loop" on will to death.
Montreal-listen to it for 4 minnutes, because its the most boring song i heard from john. and what was he thinking with those lyrics? it doesn't make sense.

this album is a must have for any fru fan. my best advice is download it its hard to find in stores. great work guys and i hope the next ataxia record to be the same. i know it will.

Free Music Review: Solid experimental project from Frusciante
Hit: 4 Stars

Automatic Writing is definitely a change of gears for Frusciante. He moves away from structured song writing and ventures towards heavy grooves and experimental melodies. What really ties this album together is John's sense of spontaneity. His playing feels so raw and unrehearsed, there's almost a psychotic energy to it. However, not all of John's guitar parts are obtrusive and in your face. There are many instances when his playing is layered, and meshed with synthesizers to create some very warm, atmospheric textures. While the bass lines are indeed a tad repetitive, this album makes up for it with a roller coaster ride of dynamics. All things considered I think The Will to Death is a slightly superior record. However, I must admit that it is always refreshing to hear Frusciante's experimental side.
