Audra McDonald could have sung standards...but boy am I glad she did not. I first heard her at the Ford Center(NYC) in Ragtime and was hooked. Her premiere recording has done many things, but most of all, makes me want more!!!Free Music Review: Long awaited bridge between Classical and Broadway styles

You can't compare her to anyone before her because she is truly original. She does what the Opera singer is not allowed to do, which is express in gush loads, and she does what the Broadway or Pop singer can't do which is sing effortlessly, without technical restriction. No ugly, nasal honky, sounds here! For those who gave her a low rating because of the "inaccessible" tunes, my suggestion to you is to crank up the sophistication level of your listening. Oversimplified commercial music is death to the future of a growing art :]

I first discovered her when I saw my first Broadway show Carousel. She not only has a strong soprano but can sound like a mezzo or belter. The songs are all beautiful and fit to her voice. Audra McDonald coats each note she sings with her honey-like voice. The songs included on this glorious cd are sure to become standards in the repertoires of future opera and musical theatre singers, but they will always be hers, as "People" is Barbra Streisand's and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" belongs to Judy Garland.
