Free Music Review: One of my Favorite CDs!
Hit: 5 Stars

I first heard Audra McDonald on the Broadway cast recording of "Ragtime," and I fell in love with her voice. This CD is absolutely gorgeous! Some of the songs take awhile to grow on you, and one or two are skippable (#6), but overall it's a wonderful effort on a debut album. I bought this album after only hearing "Stars and the Moon," and if you like no other song on the CD, it's completely worth it. I'm glad Audra chose material that wasn't mainstream--something new that we haven't heard before. The lyrics sound more like modern poetry and less like typical "Broadway" lyrics. They're something to get used to, yes, but quite interesting once in your head. If for no other reason, buy this CD just to hear Audra's voice. It's so beautiful and powerful at the same time. Truly entrancing! I can't wait for her next album!

Free Music Review: David Patrick Stearns Quote about the CD
Hit: 5 Stars

In this world of post-modern cynicism, how often do you hear a new song and
think it's a masterpiece? That happens on Audra McDonald's new disc, not
once but four times. The rest of it is pretty fine, too. And on repeated
listenings, it all gets even better.
Masterpiece No. 4 is Ricky Ian Gordon's A Lullaby,
in which the words are meant to prepare a child for the complexities and
sorrows of adulthood. The music's sweet and sour harmonies unfold in a huge
crescendo, expressing those ideas poetically as only music can. Gordon's
style is more mellifluous than the others, his music is perhaps the most
subtle and reveals the most secrets upon repeated hearings."

Free Music Review: Wait and You Will Love It
Hit: 5 Stars

I think "Way Back to Paradise" is the best CD in my vast Broadway CD collection. There is nothing better than listening to Audra McDonald sing out a wonderful version of "Stars and the Moon", "Baby Moon" or "Tom". There is however, a catch with this CD. I, like so many other people did not love the song choices at first but wait. It will grow on you and soon you will love it. It is time that we learned that there is so much more to Broadway then over used (and just plain bad) A. L. Webber music. This could be the new path Broadway is taking. So buy this CD (only if you have an open mind and are willing to listen to some great changes) and after a few times through I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Free Music Review: All for the forging of new groud
Hit: 5 Stars

The world needs more beautiful songs, and Audra McDonald gives them to us. With the release of her debut album, Ms. McDonald gives all of us a chance to hear up-and-coming music composers who demonstrate that good songs need not follow all the rules of songwriting. It is truly daring and exciting for any singer to make such a statement. "These are great songs by great composers and I have the voice to make them shine." It is so refreshing to see new artists who do not write their own material still find ways of giving us new music worth hearing.

As a musician and music lover, I highly recommend this recording. I look forward to similar statements by Ms. McDonald in the future.

Free Music Review: A very Satisfactory review
Hit: 5 Stars

Miss Mcdonald has an incredible voice as we all know. This cd features brand new songs for her to lay her golden voice upon. These new writers are the Sondheims, the Bernsteins, the Gershwins, etc. I have read the other reviews, and if there is a person who does not like this cd.......then they do not like music. This is not some syrupy repeated garbage, like the Brit(whose name will be kept secret, but he wrote a show featuring Cats)likes to write. These songs, twist and turn, suprising you with wonderful Gershwin like harmonies. The lyrics to these songs are pure poetry. I myself am a student of Musical theatre and i applaud Miss Mcdonald on her Superior effort in this debut Cd.
