Free Music Notes for Way Back to ParadiseFree Music Review: Even "music snobs" may like this : ) Hit: 5 Stars
I was expecting a recording of "showtunes," a genre which I used to like, but as an opera singer have grown to find tedious and repetitive. Not so. This album is full of relatively unknown composers, mostly very talented and exciting. It really made me want to hear more of their work. Songs like "The Allure of Silence" and "Baby Moon" are so luxuriant and simple, I could not resist them. Singers will appreciate McDonald's warm, emotive sound, which really does the composers a favor in many cases. BTW, if you liked the John Michael LaChiusa songs on the album, I recommend getting the CD of his musical "Hello Again."
Free Music Review: Diva magic Hit: 5 Stars
Not easy at first as you are probably expecting the "standard" Broadway fodder, but so worth persisting with. "You don't know this man" from "Parade" is truly wonderful especially if you know the context in which it is sung in the show. These hitherto unknown songs have made me appreciate the works of Adam Guettel and Jason Robert Brown (congratulations on the Tony!) in particular. Audra is debuting in London at the Donmar Warehouse in August 99 in the "Divas Season" following on from Patti Lupone. It should be a good month for us diva fans.
Free Music Review: THANK GOD FOR AUDRA!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
After hearing this album I am seriously contemplating naming my first born Audra--even if it is a boy! The baby that McDonald has created is a compelling masterpiece that exists on levels never before achieved by a singer, or as Terrence McNally puts it, responding to an emotion. Emotions are never lacking in this work. She is acting in this CD, she is living in this CD, it's as close to being beside her as many of us will ever be. If she doesn't win any Grammys for this I think I will go crazy! Audra, I love you!
Free Music Review: Audra McDonald.... Who could ask for anything more! Hit: 5 Stars
Although Marie Christine is not getting the ravest of reviews, Audra McDonald's debut solo album is a hit like none other! Many artists ruin themselves on their recordings by making poor piece selections. This is not the case with this CD! She not only chose pieces that complimented her voice (and what wouldn't), but also chose pieces to introduce young fresh composers who I feel will take over the Broadway scene in the years to come... WAY BACK TO PARADISE is a MUST BUY for anyone interested in musical theatre or in the beauty of this woman's God given talent!
Free Music Review: Surprising, Unpredictable Beauty Hit: 5 Stars
When I bought this cd, I wasn't quite sure what to expect, as the songwriters and the songs were all unfamiliar to me. All I knew was that I loved Audra's voice -- it is a voice with incredible emotional power and range. Now I admire these songwriters as much as I admire Audra's voice. The songs are truly the new face of musical theater. They are unpredictable, powerful, and layered with meaning. If you are a bit disoriented by your first listening, just wait. You will be mesmerized the second time. And the third, and the fourth, and the fifth . . .
