Free Music Review: half-hearted effort

Quaristice represents a giant leap backward for Autechre. After reading the glowing reviews on the web and hearing high praise from record store clerks I should have known something was amiss. What I like most about Autechre's work is the complexity of rhythm, well hidden details & melodies, and the way tracks develop slowly over time. This album pretty much sinks in on the first listen & lacks the depth of previous releases like Confield and Untilted. There is no reward for high concentration and repeated listening here. Quaristice is mostly just a bunch of unfinished ideas that don't go anywhere. I can only guess that they have been listening to their critics who simply don't get Autechre's more cerebral compositions. Another thing I don't think anyone has pointed out here is that Autechre stands to make more money just by the number of tracks per record. The more individual songs a listener has to choose from, the more downloads, not to mention that artists are paid royalties not only on the number of albums sold, but per song. Too bad. Maybe after Autechre makes a little money they will go back to creating the boundary pushing music they do best.
