Free Music Review: Should've seen this coming.....(2.5 stars)
Hit: 2 Stars

I happen to love Avenged Sevenfold's first two releases. They were, and remain to be, two of my personal favorite metalcore records. Many fans backlashed when City of Evil came out, and even though I noticed it's move toward the mainstream and was initially turned off by it, it's grown a bit on me, and now I think it's pretty good. But I still feared, somewhat knew, that further commercialization would be inevitable.

Which brings us to this point. A7X hyped this record up as their "heaviest" before it was released. Well, the guitars are more distorted (on some songs), but that doesn't necessarily make something "heavy". And ironically, for being hyped as their heaviest record, this is easily the poppiest one the band has ever recorded. And it does it's job of being pretty catchy, and some of its poppy moments are actually pretty cool. Some of it is also pretty unlistenable (particularly the ballads). Brompton Cocktail sounds like a hip-hop song for christ's sake. Apparantly this is the band trying to be "experimental yet heavy", but it's just not working. Others are just far too bland and repeditive and just feel like the same thing we've heard before.

Ironically, the best song on this disc (and one of the best A7X songs ever) is A Little Piece of Heaven, their most experimental song yet. It sounds like a victorian/polka/circus monstrosity. It could've been a total disaster, yet this is some of the most masterful and emotional songwriting I've seen from the band in years. I think it's a great feat, and the only real gem to be found on and otherwise disappointing record.

I know this band has left behind it's metalcore days and will most likely never go back to them, and that's just fine. But the band doesn't need to contract into a bunch of cliches and formulas (some of which they came up with themselves in previous records,) that they have nowadays. They're pretty much a radio band at this point. There isn't much to hate about this record, and if you fancy Almost Easy and most mainstream hard rock, you'll probably like this. If you don't, than keep away. That's pretty much the only recommendation I can give this record.

UPDATE (12/29): RIP The Rev

Avenged Sevenfold Poster

We made this record for the 18- to 25- year-old kid who just wants to blast some heavy shit out his window something you can groove to and rock out to that means something. There s no glitz or glamor just a heavy-hitting record that encompasses all of Avenged Sevenfold. It s a record that new fans
and old fans will love. M. Shadows
The debut major-label album from
Avenged Sevenfold (aka A7X), 2005's
City Of Evil, earned gold (817,640 copies sold to date), shot to Top 30 Pop and won the band Best New Artist at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards. For the selftitled follow-up, the band gets even harder and heavier. Avenged Sevenfold, the group's first album to be self-produced, is head-banging heaven.
Avenged Sevenfold's fourth full-length is little more than a workaday hard rock record replete with songs tailored for the innards of hockey rinks and basketball arenas. The nu-metal bellowing and angst-filled posturing quickly wear thin, rendering tracks such as "Scream" and "Afterlife," and the opening "Critical Acclaim," nearly interminable. Sure, "Gunslinger," "A Little Piece of Heaven," and "Dear God" offer some variation and each holds a few interesting ideas but there's nothing here that hasn't already been tried by My Chemical Romance, Nightwish, Buckcherry, or Bon Jovi. A credible but ultimately failed effort. --Jedd Beaudoin
