Free Music Notes for Avenged Sevenfold AlbumFree Music Review: The Rebublican's guide to metal. Hit: 2 StarsIt wouldn't come as a surprise to hear John McCain using "Critical Acclaim" as his campaign song during next year's presidential election - hearing M. Shadows snarl republican remarks like "they never contributed a thing to the country they love to criticize" is enough to make even the most uptight conservative grin. While Avenged's right-wing sensibilities may all but guarantee they won't be invited for an opening slot on Green Day's next tour, the suggestible kids who bought "City of Evil" will likely eat it up. It's this blunt, straightforward lyricism, coupled with a healthy dose of vulgarity (the phrase "motherf***er" seems to be the very cornerstone of Shadows' vocabulary) that reminds listeners that eloquence was never A7X's biggest selling point.
However, to their credit, the band has taken their greatest strength (namely recycling Guns N' Roses licks and serving them to an audience too young to actually remember Guns N' Roses), and refined and polished it to the nth degree. The 10 songs on "Avenged Sevenfold" are substantially shorter than those of "City of Evil," and this time the former metalcore poster boys stick strictly to the rock - unlike their previous album, there are no excursions into Danny Elfman or Segovia territory here.
But make no mistake - "Avenged Sevenfold" is the band's most accessible record to date. The songs are coated with an inch-thick layer of studio gloss and an almost pop structure provides the groundwork for the majority of the album. Additionally, many of the songs are ornamented with decorations of arguable necessity (refer to the painfully cliched organ interlude of "Critical Acclaim" and the tribal percussion of "Brompton Cocktail" for just a few of many examples throughout the album).
While the band have never been taken seriously before, they're not imploring listeners to start doing so now either. Upon hearing their latest offering, it can be reasonably inferred that Avenged Sevenfold's main objectives are a) to ride the waves of their mainstream popularity for as long as possible and b) to make sure you vote Republican next year.
