Free Music Notes for Avenged SevenfoldFree Music Review: best album i bought in a long time Hit: 5 Stars
the first thing i heard off this cd was "a little piece of heaven" and i was just like "wtf is this??" it sounds like a little bit of system of a down and a lot of theatrical sounding background music that could be on a score to a tim burton flick. i bought the cd after a friend recommended it and i've been hooked on it since. the last cds i listened to this many times the first month i owned them was pearl jam's vs. or pantera's vulgar display of power and they came out a long time ago! this album has that special something that could and should put these guys on the map like they never imagined.
the songs are arranged really well. the guitar work is sick. the drumming is awesome. and unlike other cds i've bought recently every song is different. i can listen to the whole cd without skipping a single track. you can hear their influences yet they retain an original sound.
don't listen to the haters that bash this cd...give it a shot. if you're hoping for a metalcore/punk cd like these guys started out doing, forget it. if you own their other albums, you already know A7X tends to reinvent their sound a little with every one they release. you can hear a little bit of every previous album's style, yet this one is really different.
as for the shmucks that say this is a pro iraq war cd they have no idea what their talking about. if they would just shut their mouths and read the lyrics you can see the band doesn't take a stance for or against the war, they are just giving a sick shoutout to the brave men and women that fight for our freedom. the only thing they bash is people that talk so much smack against the war, they forget to think about the soldiers that die for our freedom and give us the right to have an unfavorable opinion of a war (an action many nations punish their citizens for.) you can see they obviously have people they care about in the service and are dedicating some really good tracks to them.
i personally like every song on this album. some more than others, some i loved the first time i heard them and others grew on me. to sum it up, buy this cd!!!
Free Music Review: Great Music Hit: 5 Stars
This will be short I hope... When I first bought this album I will be honest I didn't like it. I loved City of Evil...I could listen to every single song on that CD. When I bought this CD that is what I expected. I expected City of Evil, and I didn't get it. After listening to this CD when doing a paper for philosophy I found myself enjoying the music. I was jamming out to Afterlife, Brompton Cocktail. and Lost. Also of course I enjoy Critical Acclaim and Almost Easy. This is a very good album... you just have to train your mind not to desire past works, and move on. The band has moved on and so should you! BTW With the reviewers saying that A7X just copy riffs from GNR... I am sorry I do remember GNR and that's not true at all. A little piece of Heaven reminded me of SOAD sooo am I suppose to think they're stealing stuff from them... um no... Trust me guys they may be influenced by GNR but nothing stolen from them.
Critical Acclaim 8/10 The talking in the song drops it for me...take that out, and the song is a 9
Almost Easy 9/10 Too repetitive to be a 10
Scream 7.5/10 Just doesn't do it vocally to be a 8
Afterlife 10/10 The Solo in this song alone give it a 10
Gunslinger 8/10 just a nice A7X tune
Unbound 7/10 Nothing really goes on in this song, but not a bad song
Brompton Cocktail 8.5/10 The roughness of the voice and the speed metal make this a good tune to jam to
Lost 9.5/10 The riffs are great in this song, and so are the vocals
A little Piece of Heaven 9/10 Just so weird it has to be a 9
Dear God 10/10 Its very country like, but you know there's nothing wrong and rock flows through these veins but I like how A7X shows me therir talent
Free Music Review: A7X Makes Another Great Album Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, I wanted to address something. A7X by their own admission is NOT a metal band, nor a rock band, nor any other genre band. Avenged Sevenfold is just that...Avenged Sevenfold. Now, on to the album. I knew beforehand that the CD was going to be different than the previous three releases. Thats what A7X does, their sound changes along with the membered that make up the band. And I hae to say, this IS the BEST A7X cd to date, in my opinion. And I've been listening to them since before Sounding the Seventh Trumpet came out. I love the progression. I love this CD. It starts off amazing, Critical Acclaim and Almost Easy are in my opinion the two most standout...old A7Xesque...songs. Than Afterlife, Lost, and Dear God. Those three songs alone made this CD well worth its price. As a musician myself, I get the same feeling that these songs deal with. (I do have to comment...Critical Acclaim is the only political song on the CD...which sorta makes it nor fit in as well...but still a great song.) On Gunslinger...the hair literally stood up on my arm the first time I heard their transition from the nice acoustic section to the hard hitting thereafter...amazing. Finally, Track #9...so amazing and so experimental and awesome.
All in all. I knew this CD would end up pissing alot of people off and gaining the band new fans as well. To those of you who find it necessary to be negative about how the band has changed over the years...its called maturing. Something alot of ya'll prolly don't know anything about. No one wants to hear the same A7X record over and over again. Change is good, change is perfect. And this band has perfected the art of changing, without ever changing who they are, or starying from where they came from. AMAZING CD!!!
All in al
Free Music Review: Why A7X is the most important band in rock.. Hit: 5 Stars
I said after the release of City of Evil time and time again, A7X will save rock and roll.
With their newest release, I believe they have done just that.
Avenged Sevenfold I also argue is probably the most important band in rock music right now after putting out this offering. And I will explain why.
In a world full of copycats, one hit wonders, wannabes, repeats, and people who just plain cannot play, A7X doesn't do anything new or anything that has not been done before. However, what they do, they do very well. And, they play the hell out of their instruments.
A7X takes virtually every kind of old school metal influence, and perfects it. From M. Shadows' gravelly Axl Rose-like howling on "Gunslinger" and "Dear God" to his sinister growl reminiscient of the Waking the Fallen days on "Critical Acclaim". Shadows is probably the best frontman on the market right now. The Rev is the best drummer in metal, hands down. Synyster Gates and Zacky Vengance's riffs, solos, and complementation of each other reminds us of Slash and Izzy Stradlin of the old school GNR days.
Whether A7X is playing the furious, and driving beats of "Almost Easy" or the operatic and grandious "A little peice of heaven" A7X leaves almost no influence unturned on this record. Shades of Iron Maiden, Guns N Roses, Van Halen, and Metallica run rampant in this release.
And while some old A7X fans dedicated to the old A7X records and the punk sound may not quite dig this record, It is a very important step for the whole of metal, and a very important step for this band. Avenged takes a solid stand in the very unsure world of metal music.
And I think they score big.
Free Music Review: Experimenting Never Sounded So Good! Hit: 5 Stars
I've been an A7X fan since day one. Being a resident of Huntingon Beach myself led me to catching a ton of their local shows. They've always had a raw energy and a great stage presence.
This new release is a solid release for the group AND for hard rock in general. The key to the success of this album is the sheer VARIETY of it. Both "Waking The Fallen" and "City of Evil" were great albums but I had the feeling that they were almost too predictable. Every song worked well and was placed appropriately on those albums but it just lacked the experimentation that the self titled release does.
Songs reminiscent of Waking The Fallen such as "Critical Acclaim" and "Almost Easy" show that the group haven't lost their ability to tear a set of speakers to shreds with their heavyness. The tracks that stand apart are the ones that have Avenged moving in new directions, such as the epic and pleading "Brompton Cocktail" (Shadows' strongest vocal performance on the album) and the Danny Elfman orchestrated mini opera "A Little Piece of Heaven". (Sidenote: this song was penned by Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan. For more of his tunes, be sure to purchase his side project, Pinkly Smooth's, album 'Unfortunate Snort' on CDBaby.) Kudos also to The Rev for throwing in some vocals. He's got a great, biting voice.
Overall, the songs are all well-written, epic, rocking, and everything you'd expect from Avenged Sevenfold. I will admit it's NOT "Waking The Fallen" but if you wanted them to put out the same cd again, there'd be no point for them to write new music, y'know? Pick it up and give it a spin. It's worth the time, I promise!
