Free Music Notes for City of EvilFree Music Review: One of the best albums I've ever heard. Hit: 5 Stars
I grew up in the 80's listening to hard rock and metal... became disgusted with things in general when grunge and nu-metal took over. Now, just when I thought there was no hope at all for future generations, A7X release one of the best albums I've ever heard, bar none. I mean, this album seriously has it all.
1st half, roughly: fast and aggressive songs. Good songs here but I'm more focused on the music, some of which is blindingly fast, but which also features plenty of time changes, guitar harmonies, ambitious guitar solos, etc... there is some really high quality music here. The Rev on drums is about the fastest continuously-going guy out there and he also has all the tricks and fills to fill out the songs and keep them interesting; the guitar players chug away, harmonize, play with good taste and good tone, but also throw in the occasional jaw-dropper as well. The first half of this CD is AMAZING from a technically-challenging-musical aspect of things.
2nd half, roughly: more complex arrangements, longer songs, and not quite so aggressive, but definitely very ambitious. If you've got the speed and ability, it's not too tough to throw together a speedy shred-fest. And plenty of people will line up to buy it. But in addition to pushing themselves technically, they also pushed their overall composition/songwriting skills on the 2nd half.
This overall combination of technical brilliance combined with some hard-hitting compositions is what it takes to call any album one of the best ever. These guys have done it: one of the best metal albums EVER.
[Edit, April 2008: two years later and I still stand by the bold "one of the best ever" claim: every time I pop it back in the CD player I am once again blown away. It is standing the test of time excellently!]
Free Music Review: William's Review of Avenged Sevenfold "City of Evil" Hit: 5 Stars
Avenged Sevenfold's CD "City of Evil" is probably the best CD in the 21st century I have listened to. This busy band (8 albums in 6 years) drives home the point that heavy metal is here to stay. The first albums of Avenged ... "Streets" and "Eternal Rest, Chapter 4" all sounded the same with heavy screaming and a lack of musical accompaniment ala Lamb of God from Richmond Va., would leave a true metal head with a bad taste in their mouth after being repeatedly screamed at.
Avenged Sevenfold's "City of Evil" is a totally different experience. With the throat problems lead vocalist M. Shadows had that reduced his screaming to a medium roar, left him with a Ratt sound vocally. The band came through with a crisp and clean CD that is hard driving both instrumentally as well as vocally. The musical roller coaster ride Avenged takes the listener on throughout the entire album leaves one ready for an emotional break in the form of "Seize the Day", which happens to be in the middle of the album. This melodic ballad has a continual catchy beat while maintaining rocker integrity.
The song receiving enormous radio time is "Bat Country" for a good reason. The power provided by guitarist's Synister Gates and Zacky Vengeance leaves one wondering how two men could produce such a harmonious sound, with as many rhythm changes need to bring the song to the pinnacle of greatness.
The lyrical review's I have listened too have been from the glorification of God's Holy Word, to the ending of the world, to everlasting relationships. This is another reason the CD is so great, it evokes a different thought process from different genera listeners.
Music lovers of all ages need to listen to this unique band. No other band comparison can be made to Avenged either by bands of modern day or yester year.
Free Music Review: awesome transition, great album Hit: 5 Stars
this album is so different from their last release waking the fallen. waking the fallen is an awesome metal album, and city of evil is showing that through their musical journey they appealed to the crowd with their metal, and now they are going deeper into music displaying great effort and a new interesting way of putting their music together. i wrote a review on american idiot by green day using constructive criticism against people that wanna hear another dookie and to just accept the fact that they are changing and that goes with avenged as well. what would be the point of releasing another waking the fallen?? this album shows growth and the fact that they are all around musicians not just people who can play good metal music. so many bands release album after album of the same sound with minor differences and a little bit more talent, but these guys are showing their diversity and talent and their epic side as well i.e. songs 7-10 on this album, all of them are progressive epic masterpieces in my opinion and these guys are all of 22-24 years old approximately. why are they being criticized for wanting to give the listener more? waking the fallen was a great way to catch the audiences attention, and now in my opinion they are maintaining our attention and then some! and i dont care that theyre on mtv either, this is one of the few bands that deserve their fame, if it were up to me, this band would be popular along with bands like dream theater because they take their music seriously, after all it is their career! so if u havent heard this album and u want my opinion, give it a chance and dont listen to all the immature people bashing this album because now theyre popular and theyre not playing straigt up heavy metal anymore, bands are gonna change, and in my opinion this band changed for the better.
Free Music Review: He who makes a beast out of himself, gets rid of the pain of being a man Hit: 5 Stars
Avenged Sevenfold's new CD City of Evil i think is some of their best work. ive been a fan of A7x since Waking the Fallen and still think city of evil is a little better. I think avenged sevenfold's move to no screaming was wise if they want to last. They didnt want to become another generic band and a7x didnt want to be labeled Metalcore. They want to sound like bands that made rock like ac/dc and guns n roses. I think all these emo/metalcore/screamo bands are going to be forgotten, but i think avenged sevenfold will be remembered for doing original music.
Yes, it is controversal if M. Shadows got throat surgury or not, but i dont really care for the screaming that much, even though it sounded alright. the truth is shadows can still scream, but none of the bands he grew up with screamed. Im just soo sick of people brutally putting down this CD. They say that thier fans, thier not true fans. probably half of them havent listened to the whole cd. I thinks Matt's voice is fine, the guitars just awesome, so are the drums and bass.
I think its great that Avenged Sevenfold are getting some attention with Bat Country(a song dedicated to one of my favorite movies fear and loathing in las vegas), and i think its great they are losing all those poser fans and gaining fans of their new music. They were unbelivable at warped tour, there were tons of fans thier.
Im not going to say all of my favorites on the cd, but i will say some songs are better than others.
I hope a7x will stay around for a while, but you never know. there are stories of heavy drug usage, achohol and other stuff. If they dont watch out they could lose members like we have seen with many other bands.
Overall the CD is 5/5 some great rock today out of a time where good rock is fading.
Free Music Review: job well done...4 1/2 stars Hit: 5 Stars
i would like to start off by saying this is easily going to be one of the best albums of the year. these guys are young, very talented, and deffinately doing the music industry a friggin service. in a society thats constantly being over run with all this emo crap its refreshing to finally hear a band that doesnt bitch about slitting their wrists and getting dumped. i really like M Shadows' voice style on this album. apparently he had throat surgery or something (?) which affected his singing ability but it sounds fine to me (that was directed at the jackass whos complaining about not enough screaming) the leads on this album are really something else. if youve read any of my other reviews (Trivium, Ascendancy....under the name mikerules or something...?), then you know that i play guitar my self. its great to see, and i think any other experienced player would agree with me, some new blood in the biz that actually knows what the hell they're doing. on the downside, i did find just a few flaws. sure these guys are young, but i think they need to grow up a little. musically, that is. example: they start off a song and its heavy and whatnot, but then it goes into this unexpected breakdown of a happier, nicer vibe. now, i understand these guys are going for a hybrid mix of punk and thrash metal, but i dont think this will cut it. metal is not exactly the happiest stuff around. another thing i didnt like was that the song just went on and on and on......i respect that and all becuase a song that long was probly a pain to record in the studio or whatever but i honestly got pretty bored. but enough negativity. i sure hope these guys come out with more albums something like this in the future. theyre headed in the right direction thats for sure. lets keep it that way.
