Free Music Notes for City of EvilFree Music Review: out of no where! Hit: 5 Stars
I am a rookie on the A7X bandwagon, bat country being the first I have ever heard from them. They were always one of those bands that I figured I would get around to giving a try, not knowing that they would find me and kick my ass! This CD is so unbelievably good that I can't really put it in words, but obviously I'm gonna try. After I heard bat country on MTV2 I downloaded a bunch of stuff from there previous albums and I must say one thing, I love it when bands aren't afraid to change for the better. I know that I'm gonna piss off a bunch of you die hard fans because yes, I am new to A7X, but I am not new to music. There previous albums will blend in with any of the Screaming, obviously can't hear themselves, daddy didn't love me death metal that is all over headbanger's ball. Things like mushroomhead. Anyways, I am not hear to come down on other bands, If they can relate to someone or if that music inspires you to feel or do something then more power to ya, I just don't get it.
Back to City of Evil, the lyrics are average to poor, and M.Shadows is a sufficient enough singer to make the album listenable too. What amazes me is the musicianship of this whole thing. The solos are just freaking nuts, it's like taking the theme music from an old SNES game and fast forwarding it. But the one thing that I must say is incredible is the drumming. I have heard very few bands come close to that kind of insane yet melodic drumming, Slipknot is the first one that comes to mind. This album is a must have for any metal fans and I'm sorry for all of the fans that feel alienated by the changes the band made, but if you feel left out just go buy a mic and yell in your shed its about the same thing. Thank you for your time.

To all the chumps out there: If you think a band of this caliber is "in it" for the music, you're wrong. Every band wants to sign to a major label. Every band of this power wants to sign to a major label. The bands who don't and claim they far prefer small clubs and indie labels etc. They will never make it, because they're afraid of losing the small base they've already created for the bigger base that's awaiting them.
Now... In my trip to NY a couple years ago, I was hungry for something new, something like my old school metal mixed with todays metal, and just a dash of hardcore tossed in. Some big hairy man at this music store said try this. Gave a listen, been a fan ever since.
Now take A7X and breakdown what you're really listening to. Go grab some samples from some of the greatest metal bands of the 80's. Sounds familiar and alien at the sametime.
My aging butt has been around the metal world and I've heard a TON of music in my life. Gates can stand with ANY guitarist, especially lead, that I've EVER heard and this would be Jimmy Page, Dimebag, Kirk Hammet, Kerry King, Dave Murray, etc. And being a former drummer, TheRev is from another planet. His drumming alone adds a TON of strength to A7X. Sort of reminds me of early Lars Ulrich, complexity of Bonham at times, and precision of Neil Peart, throw in the ferocity of Dave Lombardo.
A7X is balls to the wall awesome. They're not sellouts, they're captains on the metal ship, soon it will be sailing their own course. I'm sure that bothers some people, but when they sat down to create their band I'm sure they didn't think of you, rather that at some point you'd be along for the ride.

Well, dispite what everyone is saying, I thought this was a really good album. Yes, the vocals were a big change, but I actually enjoy it more because screaming at the time just shows that you have no vocal talent (don't get me wrong, there are exceptions) but i like versitilly in the vocals. Screaming/singing combo vocalists are really good. Anyway, back to the CD. At the risk of being bashed, I actually thought this album is better than Waking the Fallen. I think everyone musically stepped it up several notches and solos in almost every song is refreshing. One of the drawbacks with Waking the Fallen was the lack of solos in LONG SONGS. To me, it just makes the songs drag. But with City of Evil, that is gone. I was very impressed with the musical aspect of the record, as you can tell. The songwriting, I will adimit, is not as good as Waking the Fallen, but writer's block happens to everyone. I also think that the Western music in Sidewinder and the Orchestral parts in The Wicked End were very interesting and put a cool twist to the songs. So to sum things up, I'm glad that Avengie moved to a major label without changing their sound in a bad way, and i do think that this can compare to Waking the Fallen, if not surpass it.
Another thing i want to point out is why some people are calling these guys not "Metal Enough" and they recomend stuff like The Red Chord instead. Well, yea, Avenged Sevenfold isn't that kind of metal so of course it isn't going to sound like it.Why would you come on here and bash them for not sounding metal enough when you already knew their style of music in the first place? It's stupidity at it's finest. It makes me want to bash AC/DC for not sounding "Metalcore" enough.

I've been a fan of these guys since their first album, and I was impressed by how much they improved between each consecutive album. The third offering, 'City of Evil', carries along in the tradition of pushing the envelope and taking things to the next level. There are certainly some big changes that have taken place since 'Waking the Fallen'.
A lot of fans just couldn't make the transition - especially with regards to M. Shadow's decision to ditch the screaming and use clean vocals for almost the entirety of the album. Although I don't agree with how Avenged handled the disappointment of their long-time fans in the press with the release of 'City of Evil', I have to say that it does bring attention to one thing: These guys are young. And although they might not be emotionally mature, yet, they certainly are musically mature.
Every track on 'City of Evil' is dense and richly complex. Even on 'Seize the Day', which is the straightforward acoustic ballad song, you can hear phenomenal sweep picking and tapping guitar work going on. Sidewinder ends with a rad acoustic guitar solo, and the orchestral arrangements on Strength of the World are extremely powerful and poignant. The percussive work certainly doesn't lag behind the guitars - and is most notable on the fast-paced rockers, Beast and the Harlot, Burn it Down and Trashed and Scattered.
This is one of my favorite albums to come out in 2005, and is truly an American masterpiece. The comparisons to G 'n R are certainly merited, but I don't think that takes away from the originality and incredible amount of talent that was poured into this album. A worthy purchase, indeed.

Whoever the hell "Dialated D" is is a dumbass. This has got over 10 tracks and no track is shorter than 5 minutes, meaning the first 8 songs easily top 40 minutes. Sorry, I had to adress that first. Now, A7x did't sell out (and quit calling them Ax7, you stupid retards). I'm not going to be like all these other assclowns and act like I know every reason that they stopped screaming and went a little softer. I just think that these stupid people that think they know A7x's life story need to just shup the hell up. I'm sick of hearing it. If you don't like it, turn it off, you stupid jackasses. The guitar is amazing in this album (thanks to zachy). The drumbs are cool and his voice (shadows)is awsom. Who cares whether he got vocal surgery or not (so quit arguing about it). He sounds better now anyway. And of coarse they don't sound like they did in waking the fallen. If they wanted to sound just like that they would have named the cd waking the fallen 2 or something just like seether did. And they still wear make-up. Whoever thinks they stopped is really dumb. The new sound to there album is cool with the acustic parts. I absolutly love the outro to sidewinder. That is the best part of the entire album. I wish they made an entire song just like that. I'm not going to list my favorite songs off the album like others do because thats dumb. Who cares what my favorite songs are. Find out for yourself. Anyway, don't get this if your favorite cd is waking the fallen or sounding the seventh trumpet because your are queer and won't like this. Otherwise, buy this album asap. It is the best album I own out of 200. Thats pretty impresive.
