Free Music Review: EXCELLENT INTRO TO METALCORE
Hit: 5 Stars

I was recommended this CD during the intermission of an "Evening with Dream Theater" at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, Colorado on 14 March 2006. Conversations during the break revolved around other recent metal concerts of the last year or so in the Denver area, such as the Queensryche/Judas Priest and Rob Zombie/Iron Maiden shows of the previous summer. A few days after the show, I located a copy of "City of Evil" in my local record shop and brought it home. An old-school hard rock/HM fan (Sabbath/Priest/Queensryche, et al) this was my first introduction this hybrid of EMO/punk and HM. Fantastic album, especially "Beast and the Harlot" and "Bat Country" - great riffs, guitar work, rhythms and melodies. Afterwards, I went out to get two of their earlier albums, "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" and "Waking the Fallen", and was disappointed - primarily by the reliance on screamo vocals. I love heavy music, but for me, there's got to be melody in the vocals, and so far this is the only A7X album that has that element consistently appearing from song to song. Some of my hardcore metalhead friends, mostly into Power Metal and Thrash/Death/Speed Metal, liked the guitar work, but didn't care for the vocals on any of the albums. I think that "City of Evil" is fresh, energetic and powerful. And in contrast to what some diehard A7X fans may think, this is not a sellout - it's maturation. They're growing as musicians, and this album reflects that growth. If their next release is anything like "City of Evil", I'd be one of the first in line to buy a copy when it comes out.

Free Music Review: Amazing..
Hit: 5 Stars

Well people. I have followed avenged sevenfold through all of their CDS. And this cd just slaps you in the face, and straight up EXPLAINS and depicts this bands musical intelligence.

Its amazing. This band can acctually change their sound, do something NEW, innovate music! CHANGE THINGS UP. Im so sick of hearing a band come out with a new cd, and its exactly the same as their previous stuff.

No one can take the musical responsibility to get better. Personally, i loved their previous albums, the screaming just got to me. They could make it so melodic. But when this album came out. I was BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER. Their guitarist has gotten twice as good. Implementing so many more amazing riffs. and the solos are so... amazing. At the end of sidewinder when he goes into this flamanco guitar solo, my jaw honestly hit the floor. I was so amazed.

I give this album an absolute 5 star. From hard core metal riffs, to flamanco guitar, to hallelua chorus to melodic acoustic ballads. I dont see what else you could want from a band.

When a band can acctually innovate their music, that shows me they can produce something worth listening too. Now obviously he doesnt scream anymore. ( and by the way, he can still scream. I recently saw they in concert ) But yeah, even though he doesnt scream anymore. This album is amazing.

I sure hope he develops his voice a little, ( which is a slight downdfall ) and i hope they produce another 10 albums, and i hope they step it up, and become the modern metallica. Yes i said it. Metallica

Free Music Review: An Instant Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

If you start at Sounding the Seventh Trumpet and go to City of Evil you can definatley notice the maturity this band gains with each release. For those expecting the screaming as on the past 2 albums it's just not going to happen because Matt messed up his vocal chords big time and needed surgery, so keep an open mind before being set on hearing another STST or WTF. This album is in the style of Guns 'n' Rose's Use Your Illusion albums. The songs are all different but combine for an amazing expierence throughout the album.

Personal Favorites:

4. Bat Country- Fast, hard, typical a7x
6. Seize the Day- A November Rainish type feel, good lyrics for the girlfriend to enjoy
7. Sidewinder- classic a7x into wicked Santana type guitar solo at end
8. The Wicked End- gotta love 14 piece orchestra/choral interlude reminds me of I Won't See You Tonight Part 1 from WTF
9. Strength of the World- Western intro, into a classic hard a7x song
(last 3 songs really show the maturity and the risks the band is taking, I really enjoyed them and thought they add a lot to the album others may not, but I think these songs are epic)
11. M.I.A.- Iron Maiden-esque guitars/drums prehaps my very favorite song on the album.
Those looking for the old a7x are never going to get that, and those worried about the album being too mainstream when have you heard of a mainstream album with songs on the average of 6mins & 40 seconds long. To think of what's to come from this very talented band is mind boggling

Free Music Review: Intelligent aggression
Hit: 5 Stars

In a year of great metal releases, this one stands easily in the upper echelon. This is my first exposure to A7F, so I don't have any historical bias - only my opinion. I must preface by saying I am not a fan of the "death rattle" lyrics; I just can't relate to them. If that is what A7F was prior to this release, mixed with double-kick rhythms - RIP and good ridance, because that stuff sucks; it's not even music - get over it.
This album has so many pluses within it, I don't know where to begin. The writing is very strong, the rhythms excellent, and the soloing phenominal. In parts, the soloing is so good, borderline shredding - yet within the context of the song. The vox is excellent - I surely hope this cat does not go back to the cookie monster vocals, because he really does shine in his clean registers. A few song choruses are a bit sing-song, but who cares, the remainder of those songs, and music kick ass.
This sort of music has become a lost art. Long, complete songs telling a story, with tasteful bridges, and blistering solos. I don't think any one song is under five minutes, with a few over seven. The guitar work is a reminiscent decadent mixture of the styles of Slash (GNR), Dave Mustaine and crews, Adrian Smith, and Vinnie Moore. There is not a better bang for the classical metalhead buck (75 frickin' minutes worth?) this year.
If nothing else, this album is an awesome tribute to Guns & Roses, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, and every other power thrash band out there. Horns up!

Free Music Review: One Word--Awesome!!
Hit: 5 Stars

For all of you so-called metal "know-it-alls" out there, this album happens to be one of the best albums of 2005 and will continue to be one of the best albums of 2006. I have read a lot of reviews that smash this album as being "metalcore", "pop", etc. Perhaps you would rather be listening to Jessica Simpson, Black-Eyed Peas, or Kanye West??? If you do not think that this is a good ROCK album you should be listening to the aforementioned Pop/Rap crap because you obviously do not appreciate the sound of REAL instruments. Now... I am through venting.
For a true roller coaster ride of emotion, musical prowess, and originality--BUY THIS ALBUM!!! First of all the vocalist does an excellent job considering the fact that he suffered through the agony of ripped vocal chords and was required to have them reconstructed in turn learning to sing all over again. The drums are fantastic, and while not the greatest, they do serve their purpose in the rythm section. Thirdly, there IS a bass--those rythm changes are NOT only guitar and drums. And lastly, the guitar work is some of the most extreme that I have heard in quite some time--while not necessarily the fastest or heaviest--the rhythm goes from heavy to soft to middle-of-the-road while the lead overlaps the rhythm through transition of verse to bridge to chorus. Synester Gates is one of the best new guitarists out there. The songwriting is exceptional.
These guys are helping in the return of ROCK. For that alone they would not receive a bad review from me!!
