Free Music Review: A music lover's review
Hit: 5 Stars

Before I start talking about the music here I have to make a few things clear: Yes, the members of this band's names sound like horrible wrestler names(i.e. Synester Gates, Johhny Christ, etc.), yes the singer has a platinum grill, and the band is all over TRL played with the likes of Madonna and Hillary Duff. Now with all of that (and a little more) aside, this band should be praised for bringing some talent back into popular music. Their new cd, City of Evil is the best new metal release I have heard in forever. They have two awesome guitarists that seem to have been schooled in Iron Maiden and Pantera 101 anda drummer that is technically proficient(no Mike Portnoy but can hang with the likes of Dave Lombardo). The bass has alot to be desired, but does shine on a couple of tracks. Personally, I didn't really listen to their music before this one, so I can't really complain about the vocals(but I like singing rather than screaming).
1.Beast And The Harlot- A great opening song. Definitely has some Maiden-esque factors in here. Plus, the solo is amazing. Very nice feel to the chorus.
2.Burn It Down- When I first heard this song, I immediately thought of how much this sounded like Dream Theater. Definitely one of my faves on this album. Very melodic and kick ass att the same time.
3.Blinded In Chains- Very fast paced, but not up to par with the last two songs.
4. Bat Country- Even though this song has been getting alot of play lately, its still not that bad of a song. Probably the most accessable song on the cd. The dueling solos definitely remind me of Judas Priest.
5. Trashed and Scattered- Not one of my favorite songs on the cd, but the breakdown is the first time you really hear any bass so far.
6. Seize The Day- A very nice ballad. I like the hints of piano that they use. It really changes the pace of the album. Has a somewhat Guns N Roses feel to it.
7. Sidewinder- The first 2/3 of this song are pretty good, but then at the end comes a huge suprise, an acoustic breakdown with classical guitar. This track shocked me and shows how credible this band could be. Yes people, this band has actual talent.
8. The Wicked End- The beginning is the only "solo" the bass player actually gets. Towards the middle of this song is a Danny Elfman-esque symphony piece, which I thought was ver unique. Which is topped off by the band playing with the symphony. Very nice.
9. Strength of the World- It starts off western-like, then goes into a very anthematic song. Again, another song that becomes ballad like at one point in the song.
10. Betrayed- Another great song on the album. Nothing notable that hasn't already been said about the other songs.
11. MIA- Great ending with the chantable "whoas". Sounds like it would be great to see in concert.

Well that about sums up my review for this album. I can truly say I'm a music lover and this band is on its way to becoming great.

Well, i have had this album for quite a while now and i must say, it is prolly the best cd i have ever heard and im gonna review it song by song here we go: 1. Beast and The Harlot: great starter for the album, electric intro with the siren goin off and the double bass goin. Love the solo in this song. 9.5/10 2. Burn it down: Oh what an intro, prolly the best on the album, love the dual guitar which is in every song , but most good in this one. Great solo, Love the vocals right before an after the solo. 10/10 3. Blinded in chains : Well if any song competes with burn it down for best intro, it is this. Quite possibly the best drum track on the album and it show around the 2:30 mark with a lightning fast double bass solo. great song.9.5/10 4. Bat coutry: the first single off the record and a damn good one too. This used to be my favorite song on here , but it is extremely overplayed on radio and tv . Very catchy , very good solo and if u dont like the vocals , u should cause they r good.10/10 5. Trashed and Scattered: Not my favorite on the album but still great nonetheless. I love the vocals in this song. 9/10 6. Seize the day : all i can say is that this is perfection at its greatest , wow the solo fits the song perfectly , perfecet guitar, perfect drums, perfect everything. 20/10 7. Sidewinder: Another outstanding song with an awesome latino ending. Very cool intro with the guiater fade in. One of my favorites.11/10 8. The Wicked end : This is where mr. Johnny Christ( bass ) shines. Unreal bass at the beginning. That goes into an epic song that just sounds epic. Another great one i think talkin about the end of the world. 9/10. 9. Strength of the world : A long intro with an orchestra , but when it gets into the chorus, it kicks your A**. I love the solo in this song and everything leading up to it. At the end when he says " i miss my family, i'll never be alright." That lets you know how epic this song is. 9.5/10 10. Betrayed : Tribute to the late great " DImebag Darrell, and a mighty good one. Love the vocals, especially the chorus where he says " passion in my eyes , i lived it everyday." Just amazing vocals, amazing everything else too. the Rev ( Drums ) shows his talent in this one. Great song. 11/10. 11. M.I.A : my favorite song on the album , great little intro with fast paced drumming and sweet double bass action. Gah i love the lyrics in this. " So many soldiers on the other side, I take their lives so they can't take mine " , and " Some are scared others killing for fun , I shot a father right in front of a son, take away my consciousness and please erase my dreams " . Wow, that is amazing, Love it. 50/10. Overall, i give this a 12/10 cause its the best cd i have ever lisened to, and if you think they have sold out listne to the epic guitar solos a few times and come talk to me.

Free Music Review: No screaming/no problem
Hit: 5 Stars

At first listen some not-so-well-informed listeners will assume that since they're on a major label now, the corporate fat cats that be have ordered them to ixnay on the screaming vocals......BZZZZZT! Wrong.

While playing in Leeds last year, vocalist M.Shadows suffered a broken blood vessel in his vocal chords. After several surgeries and months of training with a vocal coach (whom has worked with the likes of Axl Rose), his singing voice (which was incredible to begin with) is back and better than ever. And at risk of losing his voice for good; he's been medically advised to let the screaming vocals go the way of the dinosaur.

It's more than evident that 2003's Waking The Fallen barely scratched the surface of the musical ability and range that this band posesses. The songs have become even more diverse and epic. Also, Zacky Vengeance and Synister Gates have given in to their urge to shred their asses off. Admittedly, their guitar work is worlds above their ability to choose stage names (sorry guys, couldn't help it).

You almost feel naughty banging your head to their lead work...just because it almost doesn't seem right to hear this kind of fast fretting indulgence. But if it's wrong; I don't want to be right.

The Rev (drums), and Johnny Christ (bass) are much higher in the mix this time, and don't think for a second that it's a bad thing. Mr. Rev's drumming is a suspected result of a genetic engineered splice between Dave Lombardo and Vinnie Paul. And to call Johnny's work on the low end 'solid' would be a gross understatement.

Though not a bit shy about wearing their influences on their sleeve, none of this sounds derivative in the slightest. After all, if the rock media can call Jet a great new band (with their recycled AC/DC leftovers).... this is groundbreaking.

Once again produced by Mudrock, the sound is much less prone to clipping as the last album was. This is largely due to a major label budget I assume.

With some songs bordering on sensory overload due to breakneck tempo and dynamic shifts, this is a dark/light dynamic that would give a photographer an anuerysm (I hope I spelled that right).

To close in short; this album is 11 tracks and clocking in at just under 73 minutes. If you're tired of hearing cheesy synths, whining, bird calls, and stupidly simple arrangements being passed off as metal (not going to name names, but it rhymes with Disturbed), do yourself a favor and pick this album up.

This just may be a sign that we're at the beginning of an era where it is once again okay to know your ass from a hole in the ground concerning the instrument you play.

Five stars, and two sets of horns....way up.

Free Music Review: Warning : not the Avenged Sevenfold that you're used to.
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to admit, I have not been with this band since the beginning. In fact, the only reason that I ever became interested in this band was because of the song, "Bat Country", on Madden NFL 2006's soundtrack. I didnt think any of the other songs on this album could surpass "Bat Country". But boy, thank God I did pick up this CD, because so many of them did, even though it still is a great song. As the title mentions, you will find hardly ANY screaming on this album. Actually, I'd be willing to bet that a single track off of their debut or sophomore album has more screaming than this entire disc does. The songs on "City of Evil" have tons more to offer, considering that on average they are about 6 or 7 minutes. Avenged Sevenfold are finally displaying the great musical talent that they have. The only thing about this album is that Shadows does not have NEARLY as good as a singing voice live as he does on this album. Other than that, the guitar duo is great alongside the constant in-your-face drumming of The Rev. Here are some of my favorites :

1. Beast And The Harlot - A tremendous way to open an outstanding album. The beginning will have you so pumped for the rest of the song. I liked the chorus of this song so much that I went online and downloaded a ringtone of it for my phone.
2. Burn Tt Down - The best example on the album of how much Avenged Sevenfold have grown musically. So many different great riffs and harmonies in this track.
3. Blinded In Chains - A flat-out rocker. This one is packed with great lyrics, and can you say double-bass drumming? The Rev struts his stuff here.
5. Trashed And Scattered - It seems like 3 different songs, or movements, packed into one. This is my favorite right here, because it just has so much to offer.
7. Sidewinder - The riffs will grab your attention on this song. The bridge is really neat too, but my favorite part of this song is at the end when things go acoustic and almost Latin American for about 2 minutes.
9. Strength Of The World - There's an old western feel for the first part of this track. I especially appreciate the solid guitar solo just before things change up and seem to go into a different song.

So, here's the verdict, If you loved how the old Avenged Sevenfold used to sound, you probably won't dig the sound they're going for on this album. In my opinion, they're progressing musically, which always makes for a better career. I find myself very anxious for this band's next album, probably the most anxious I've ever been for an upcoming CD. Of course, I guess I'm more anxious for Lamb of God's, "Sacrament", but that's beside the point. DONT MISS OUT, pick up "City of Evil". Thank you for your time.

Avenged Sevenfold have produced a masterpiece here. I can't say I agree with many of the reviews at all. Sure I can hear certain influences but Avenged Sevenfold really show what an original band they are here. Shadows vocals don't always sound 100%, but considering what happened, his vocals are sounding very good. His vocals really are beautiful at times.

Beast and the Harlot sounds like Metallica? Seriously what Metallica have you been listening to...Doesn't sound anything like Metallica rest assured, very good song.

Burn it Down is A7X at their best. Comes across as quite classical at times, great vocals and some great lead work from Synester and Zacky. Heavy Metal.

Blinded in Chains has some excellent melodies and a superb chorus, this is another winner.

Bat Country is a quality tune. They have filmed a video for this I do believe, it will be all over your televisions very soon. A talented band on TV? That would make a change wouldn't it.

Trashed & Scattered - Starts off with some excellent neo classical lick. There is a Velvet Revolver influence in here somewhere but A7X are far more interesting. Don't get me wrong, I dig Velvet Revolver.

Seize the Day...Surely they will release this huh? This is a beautiful ballad. The backing vocals sound very good on this track, really is a beautiful song.

Sidewinder - What can I say, this is a masterpiece. They even pull out their classical guitars in this one, great outro. The song has somewhat of a flamenco theme, really makes this song interesting.

The Wicked End - This is one of the heavier songs of the album. But wait...it slows down and turns into a brilliant orchestral piece, seriously an amazing song.

Strength of the World - Great southern sounding intro, anybody would think this was a ballad but then the electric guitars kick in. The chorus has a definite 80's feel here. Some of the lead sounds like something off Sonic the Hedgehog, but I'm not complaining, this just makes the song all the more better.

Betrayed - dedicated to Dimebag, good lads. This kicks off with a beautiful verse, if you can't appreciate this you are probably very ill. I love this song.

M.I.A. - Some weird vocals here but this is an overall winner. The chorus is yet again very good. M Shadows really knows how to sing. I still don't believe he's 100% but like I say, he really does work wonders on this record

Overall, if you like superb solos, huge chorus's and original music (well duhh, who doesn't) then this really is for you. This is quite possibly the most amazing cd in my collection, it is a true gem, BUY IT NOW!
