Free Music Notes for City of EvilFree Music Review: A7X to the next level... Hit: 5 Stars
"City of Evil" by Avenged Sevenfold is by far one of the most unique metal albums of the year. Depending on whether you're an old fan of the band or a new comer to them, you may find the vocals on the album a little uncomfortable at first, but once Shadows voice sinks in, you'll see what an achievement this cd is.
The instrumentals on this album are absolutley incredible. The Drumming has gotten a lot more creative and fast paced, and the Rev tears it up each and every song, and in their genre, the guitarists have to be some of the most talented guys in around these days.
The first half of this album feels like the more catchy and upbeat part of the album. With parts like the powerful feeling of "The Beast and the Harlot", the fast paced intro to "Burn it Down", and the insane solo to "Bat Country", you'll find yourself listening to these tracks constantly. "Seize the Day" is the very calm and very deep halfway point of the album, setting the tone perfectly for the second half, where the band just unleashes hell. "Sidewinder" has one of the most impressive acoustic outros of any song by a modern day band, and just makes you listen in awe as the guitarists play away. "Wicked" perfectly describes the song "The Wicked End" as it starts and ends with intensity, with such an amazing bridge, with a sort of Edward Scissorhands feel to it. The western-like intro to "Strength of the World" is really not something you hear from bands nowadays, and it's a shame. The next song, "Betrayed" is based on Dimebag Darrell and his death, and the lyrics put into the song are both heavy and beautiful, as is the music played with them. "M.I.A" is a great closing song with great guitar, and is a perfect reason while this album needs to be heard from beginning to end.
This album isn't five stars for no reason at all. Although some songs may take time to warm up to, every track is truly great. their was a lot of negativity towards this album, due to the lack of screaming. If you really listen to the album, you can't honestly say that screams belong in any of the songs. Every track is as it should be. Avenged Sevenfold has done what no other band in their genre would even consider to do, and they have created a masterpeice in the process. This band has been brimming with talent ever since their first album, and now they have mastered their craft. "City of Evil" is a must have album.
Free Music Review: Wow... I'm Hooked Hit: 5 Stars
Let me just say... I had only heard 2 a7x songs prior to listening to City Of Evil. Chapter 4 (from the previous "Waking the Fallen") and Bat Country. I really got the album because of Bat Country, it is an amazing song from top to bottom. After purchasing the album, I can't even begin to choose a favorite. This is one of those rare albums you can pop in the CD player and completely neglect the skip button all the way through. I am still listening to it nonstop all the time and I think they have become my favorite band, and I didn't even really enjoy harder rock until I heard City of Evil and then Waking the Fallen. a7x has restored my faith in rock and roll. Rock on dudes, but lose the nail polish maybe. Also - 11 tracks might not seem like a lot of music but when added up it's well over 70 minutes, every song is at least 5 mins.
Breakdown
1.) Beast and the Harlot - 8.5/10 great opening track
2.) Burn It Down - 9/10 Breakneck speed that stops on a dime and hits hard until the end.
3.) Blinded in Chains - 7.5/10 Not one of the best tracks but Its still a quality song
4.) Bat Country - 10/10 I loved it even more when I found it was a tribute to Hunter S Thompson and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
5.) Trashed and Scattered - 9/10 - Along the lines of Burn it down. This one starts off a little slow but then it picks up and kills all the way through. Awesome chorus.
6.) Seize the Day - 9/10 this one grew on me, I'm a fan of piano infused into rock (Think November Rain or I won't see you tonight part 1)
7.) Sidewinder - 10/10 It's awesome all the way through, and the acoustics at the end is the icing on the cake.
8.) The Wicked End - 11/10 Quite possibly the greatest song I have ever heard, I am still blown away when Shadows' voice and the instruments join in with the orchestra. It's dominance defined. They actually did this live too with the full string orchestra and boys choir.
9.) Strength of the World - 10/10 It's long but it's just so good. Again, the guitar solos will blow you away.
10.) Betrayed - 9.5/10 Great Tribute to the late great Dimebag
11.) MIA - 8/10 Another good mix of slow down and start back up, which they've been doing through the whole album. Kind of tough to have to Follow up tracks 7-10, but it manages.
Free Music Review: Dont post many reviews, but this CD is vastly underrated... Hit: 5 Stars
I have seen so many 1 star reviews for this cd, that i felt it was my duty to post my thoughts to help reassure those considering buying this cd. I would have given it a 4/4.5 star rating, but it needs to recover from all those 1 star shots! Firstly, this cd is different than other A7X cd's, there is little screaming on this album! I bought this cd the day it came out, after really getting into "Unholy Confessions" and "I Won't See You Tonight, Part 1". And while at first i was a little baffled, i have grown to love the cd. So, here is my breakdown...
Beast and the Harlot - 10/10 - A great start to the cd. While it is a little odd at first, it will hook you.
Burn It Down - 9/10 - Another awesome fast paced song.
Blinded in Chains - 9/10 - Yet again, keeps up the intensity of the cd. sweet tune
Bat Country - 100/10 - Yup, people have said it before...AWESOME SONG! First time i heard it, replayed it 3 times just to let it sink in. The chorus is just so effin catchy, and the drums are beautiful...not to mention a sweet solo. No surprise this one hit the radio!
Trashed and Scattered - 7/10 - Okay, maybe it is just the pleasure of following Bat Country...but this one doesn't really do it for me. I like it up untill the slowdown for the "trashed and scattered" part, i just can't feel that part.
Seize the Day - 10/10 - Really a beautiful song, love it!
Sidewinder - 9/10 - Got a really weird feel to it, and i dig it.
The Wicked End - 8.5/10 - The lead in this song is just sweet!
Strength of the World - 9/10 - Just have to be in the mood for it. Nice song, but an epic. They definitely called up the orchestra on this one, but it fits nicely!
Betrayed - 9/10 - Really awesome song. Took me a few listens to really get into it, but it's hot.
M.I.A. - 9/10 - A great song to end the CD, and a great song period!
So, there it is. I suggest buying the CD, but that's just me. Now, i know most people always suggest similar bands to look into, but i have a very varied taste, and i am going to just name a bunch of cool bands. Yes, i am sure everyone will hate atleast one of them, but oh well! (CHECK OUT: Breaking Benjamin, Tantric, Minus The Bear, Dredg, Porcupine Tree, Coheed and Cambria, In Flames, Codeseven, and Blind Guardian)

Free Music Review: Excellent Musicians making excellent music Hit: 5 Stars
It seems strange to me that all these little posers can say that A7X sold out. So M. Shadows blew a vocal cord and can't scream. I think it is a breath of fresh air in a music scene so oversaturated with guys who scream and think that makes them heavy. The beauty of this album lies in the fact that the band doesn't have to scream and appeal to the little 14 year old wannabes who will only listen to a band because they scream or because they fit into this little preconception of what is rebellious or heavy. M. Shadows' voice on this album does indeed come across as a little too much. It seems affected, but overall does not diminish the quality of the record as a whole. One song that I believe shines above and beyond any of A7X's pre-City of Evil material is Sidewinder. The vocal delivery fits the song, and in my humble opinion a scream would not do this song justice. The end of the song sees a foreign element in A7X's music as the song acquires a latin feel. This alone would cause many "metalheads" to discount the album, saying that A7X has gone soft. However, I find that this acoustic piece stands as one of the heaviest moments on the entire album. The vocal melody is absolutely captivating and the guitar draws the listener in yet further. The Left acoustic Solo, it stands to note, is played by Brian Haner, Synyster Gates' father.
Most of thee other tracks are also excellent, with Seize The Day being another standout slow tempo piece. The solo is amazing, as is the rhythm behind it. Too many times listeners skip over the importance of the rhythm guitar behind a piece, but in reality the rhythm can make or break the solo.
My Third favorite track on the album is Beast and the Harlot. What an amazing piece of music. As epic as it is heavy, and that says a lot. Great rhythm, great lead lines, insane soloing, it has it all. By far my favorite of the fast, conventionally "heavy" tracks on the album.
Overall, the musicianship on this album is amazing, with the solos far outmatching the previous albums. Anyone who is a fan of aggressive, technical music should definitely lend an ear to Avenged Sevenfold. Not every track is for everyone, but more than likely each listener will be able to find something they like about this stellar album.
