Free Music Notes for City of Evil

Free Music Review: (3.5 stars) Matt's tough vocals and the rage of guitars! OK album, but very different
Hit: 4 Stars

This album was OK, the solo in "Sidewinder" was bad, and the song "Strength Of The World" was the WORST! But "Blinded In Chains", "Burn It Down", "Bat Country", and "The Wicked End" were my most favorites!

1."Beast And The Harlot" 9/10- Great way to begin this album! Kinda slow but love when Matt goes "the day has for all us sinners". The solo was awesome!

2."Burn It Down" 10/10- Furious guitars and M. Shadows' singing sounded so fast too. Even though there is no solo9, I still love this song!

3."Blinded In Chains" 9/10- The beginning was amazing!! It sounded just like how they used to be. The chorus was great! But it can get kinda boring, the ending sounded kinda dark.

4."Bat Country" 10/10- Catchy chorus! With some screaming at the beginning and amazing solo! But the soft parts were useless. Not many people listen to this song anymore these days. But i still lov ethis song!

5."Trashed And Scattered" 8/10- This song was really boring, no solo either, but I just love the chorus! It was so catchy and long!

6."Seize The Day" 5/10- I don't like this song, too soft and no raging guitars or some screaming. But the soft guitar solo and the ending just got my attention.

7."Sidewinder" 8/10- This song started out great! I really love the beginning, but the ending sucked really bad! It ruined the whole song!

8."The Wicked End" 11/10- I really love this song! With awesome bass at the beginning, great chorus, and my favorite solo! This song sounded kinda dark too, this should also be the crowd's favorite.

9."Strength Of The World" 3/10- I HATE THIS SONG! This sounded western at the beginning, and why did the whole band go STRENGTH OF THE WORLD!! at the chorus? I really hate this song!!

10."Betrayed" 8/10- I like the beginning, this was kinda of a positive song, he was singing about the death of the guiarist of Pantera. I really liked how this song ended.

11."M.I.A." 9/10- The ending and beginning was really boring, but the middle was great! Great guitar solo, the chorus was good too. Matt was singing about the war of Iraq, if you read the lyrics you can tell it's telling about soldiers fighting for their lives.

I don't understand why so many people kept saying that their new album is gonna come out like in a couple of months, it's like gonna come out a lot longer than that. A7X has changed a lot! The only thng that's the same about them is them are the guiar solo's. I think that Synyster Gates is the world's best guiarist ever! And that Rev's the best drummer! His drumming is so fast and great to listen!! But this album is not gonna be as good as you will think it is.

Free Music Review: Great Album!
Hit: 5 Stars

These guys really know how to rock out, and I love it! I highly recommend this album.

Free Music Review: Not Nearly as Bad as You Would Imagine, and In Fact...
Hit: 3 Stars

It's actually pretty good. AS far as I'm concerned, the guitar work in this album redeems any other flaws, for the most part. The two guitarists happen to be shred machines, who can outplay just about any other contemporary metal band I can think of, with just a few exceptions. Their fluid, blistering sweep picking and neo-classical tinged soloing gives Yngwie Malmsteen a run for his money, and their dual-guitar harmonies are nothing short of Iron Maiden-esque. The vocalist isn't all that bad, either. I used to think these guys were a joke, but it seems that with this album, they've paid homage to classic metal by really dedicating time to their instruments, and putting a lot of thought and variety into the music. They aren't terribly original, as their influences can be traced back to punk, hardcore, and ESPECIALLY metal. I'd argue that they're a full-fledged metal band now, with the chops to prove it.

Yes, the guys look ridiculous and dress like fools. BUT so did most metal bands in their day. These guys actually look less ridiculous than most 80's hair metal bands did when they were getting excessive radio play (Take a look at Def Leppard or Van Halen footage from the 80's).

They have a good ear for melody and harmony, and can construct some very catchy songs. Yes, it's true that they can be annoying, but I think that the guitar work and sense of melodic direction makes up for many of the flaws on the album. It's still a little hokey when they break into a punk-rock tinged verse, or the lead singer hits one of his "rough patches" where he just sounds ridiculous. However, it doesn't happen nearly as much as it used to, and I think that it might actually be possible to take this band seriously for once. If nothing else, listen for the stellar guitar work.

3 stars, maybe 3 and a half. Definitely not a bad effort.

Free Music Review: Don't burn it down - a7x's surprisingly good album
Hit: 4 Stars

It is, no doubt, a healthy sign when a departure is made from a tradition that has become a mere convention through observance, but it remains to be seen whether success can be attained by so abrupt a change from the established vogue as is exhibited in A7X's "City of Evil" album. My only previous experience with this group is seeing the videos of "Bat Country" and "Seize the Day" (which seem to be constantly on the Fuse network), so I was somewhat apprehensive about buying this album. Much to my delight, this album is so drastically different (hitherto all I could listen to was Offspring) and it proves that modern rock can be more than screaming and deafening noise.
Rather than give a rundown of all the songs, I'd rather say just a few things. The songs run a lot longer than anything else I'm used to hearing. Shadow's lyrics are quite poetic and metaphorical, and are certainly thorough-composed. However, I felt there was a lot of musical sameness from one song to the next (the majority of the songs are hovering around D minor). The range of styles shows a level of musical sophistication that one would be hard pressed to find in other hardcore albums today. While I enjoyed it very much on the first listen, I can't say that other listeners who are used to death metal won't be turned off from this album. I do think it is a fine album and does not deserve as much crap as it has been given.

Free Music Review: Different, but still good
Hit: 4 Stars

Alot of A7X fans may have been disapponted in the change of style from "Waking the Fallen", but to me, all this album does is prove just how immense the talent level of this band is. It almost sounds like a whole different band at some points. You won't find any screaming, but you will still find the same awesome guitar work A7X is known for. Aside from repeatedly listening to Bat Country and Seize the Day, Sidwinder really grabbed me. I love the tempo/style change torwards the end of the song. A couple of the songs do seem to drag on a bit, and I do prefer "Waking the Fallen", but this is still a great album, and definitely worth buying.
