Free Music Notes for Let GoFree Music Review: Amazing Avril Hit: 5 Stars
Avril's been praised for being independent and real - for being herself. But she's also been criticized for being a "fake" independent. Critics say she's just another pop sheep dressed up in a punk wolf's clothing. But what is important here is not necessarily Avril's image - it's her music. And whether or not Avril is truly a punk/sk8er or another Britney, her music is not affected and remains solid and true. Her first single, "Complicated" is more on the pop side of things, according to Avril herself in an interview. But it isn't the super-sweet, syrupy love songs typical of pop artists. The theme that permeates the song and Avril's first album, "Let Go," is "be real." "Complicated" is about the facades people put on, about those of us who "become somebody else, 'round everyone else." Avril promotes a respectable message of being true to oneself, and she does so to the tune of original melodies and down-to-earth lyrics. "Anything But Ordinary" is similar in its message and its pop sounds, but is a different song altogether. As a 17-year-old, Avril has been called an "old soul" and for good reason. She somehow manages to have a deep insight into the true value of life, as she sings, "I want to know that I have been to the extreme/So knock me off my feet/Come on now, give it to me/Anything to make me feel alive." We have but one life, and Avril sings enthusiastically about making the most out of that life by refusing to put on facades and just being oneself. "My World" is another pop song. Upbeat and lighthearted, Avril writes of her life as a smalltown girl from Napanee, Ontario, population 5,000. The more lyrical songs "I'm With You" and "Things I'll Never Say" are beautiful works of musical talent. Avril's sweet side comes through, as she sings with powerful emotion about past love experiences. She said in an interview that she needs to sing what comes from her heart; listeners can't doubt that these songs are her personal experiences, as her passion and emotion shines elegantly through. The alternative "Mobile," "Tomorrow," "Too Much to Ask," and "Naked" demonstrate Avril's wide range of genres. While not considered "slow songs" like "Things I'll Never say" and "I'm With You," but not as bouncy and poppy as the first songs mentioned, these alternative tracks provide the same raw emotion of a 17 year old who is wise beyond her years. Avril's eclectic mix is nearly completed with the funky "Sk8er Boi," reminiscent slightly of surfer music, and the soft rap of "Nobody's Fool." A white rapper? Avril does it tastefully and with amazing style to portray her stubborn attitude towards giving in to fake facades and images. The aforementioned "Sk8er Boi" is perhaps the only fictional song on the album, although it is rooted in personal experiences, as Avril said she is frequently annoyed by judgments passed because she's a skater. Critics have snubbed her lyrics as juvenile, especially "We rock each others world," but they undoubtedly fit the song's tempo and style, and moreover fit Avril's personality and tendancy to stick with what she thinks fits. Finally, two slightly darker pieces complete the album. "Unwanted" is more of a rock song in which Avril's deep, powerful vocals have been likened to Tori Amos and Alanis Morissette. "Losing Grip" actually may not be considered dark by most. It's simply darker than the pop of "Complicated," the track immediately following it. Nevertheless, it is my favorite track on the album because it displays her voice beautifully. Her breakdown into the simple repetition of "I'm crying out loud, crying out loud..." always fills me with awe as I listen to her voice tinkling up and down the uneven scale of notes that makes her voice sound slightly (and beautifully) Irish or Gaelic. All in all, Avril is the best artist to have come onto the scene in a long while, especially among the popular artists. She is real and she plans on keeping both herself and her music real. She has a beautiful and powerful voice, and lyrics that offer deep insights into life and relationships, even though those insights may manifest themselves into teenage lyrics. But hey, all this is much more than anybody should expect from a mere 17-year old, and Avril deserves two thumbs way up.
Free Music Review: Let go is a cd you won't wanna let go Hit: 5 Stars
Avril Lavigne's debut c.d., Let Go, was released on June 4th. She worked on it until it totally represented her. When I bought the c.d., I didn't think the c.d. would be so fantastic. Let Go is awesome and it's my new favorite c.d. The c.d. has a lot of songs everyone can relate to.All of the lyrics and music are absolutely awesome! I could listen to Let Go over and over and over again! Here's a brief description of the songs:Losing grip: This song starts out slow, then it goes full out into an angry chick rock song. This song is really awesome. Avril is singing about how she was used and is now alone. I love to listen to this song when I've been betrayed by someone, it captures my feelings almost perfectly. Complicated: Complicated is Avril's first single and also a good choice. This song and sk8er boi are the only ones with a lot of pop in them, and these songs are still rock songs. Complicated is about someone not be real or who they actually are. The person is pretending to be someone they're not. Avril is asking that person why they've got to be that way, they should just be theirself. Sk8er Boi: This is a cute song, also with a lesson hidden in it. The lesson is don't let anyone tell you to not do something, you shouldn't let anyone hold you back from what you want. You may later regret it. Sk8er Boi is about a girl and a guy liking each other, except they are of different social classes. The guy, the sk8er boi, doesn't care. But the girl's friends don't approve of him so she doesn't go out with him. Later in life she regrets her decision. This song is still fun to listen to because the sk8er boi is with Avril!! I'm With You: Avril sings about being deserted in this song, which we can all relate to at some point. She's so confused about things but she just needs someone to come and take her away from this crazy life. I'm With you is a really deep song, I love listening to it. Mobile: Mobile is about everything in life changing so fast, without your control. Sometimes the changes are just too much, that you want to scream out loud. Unwanted: I love this song, this is one I always want to listen to because I can relate. Avril wants to know somebody but that person just doesn't want to get to know who the real Avril is. He doesn't even know her and he pushing her away and dissing her. Tomorrow: Tomorrow, which was on the Felicity series finale, is a nice slow song. Avril sings that she doesn't know how she can trust this person when nothing that comes out of their mouth is true. She says tomorrow's a new day, maybe I believe you then. Anything but Ordinary: I really, really like this song. The lyrics are like nothing you've heard before. She sings about not being ordinary and all of her not-so-ordinary habits and thoughts. The chorus is really deep. I can relate to the lyrics of this song too, especially the first verse, where she admits she laughs herself to sleep as a lullaby. But Avril would rather not live a normal, ordinary life. She'd rather be anything but ordinary in life, instead of wasting it. Things I'll Never Say: Anybody who has a crush on a boy who makes them all nervous inside will relate to this song. Avril sings about trying to be perfect for the boy because he's worth it. She sings about wishing she could say everything she feels to him, but the words just won't come out. We all have those things we'll never say. My World: My World is about Avril's small hometown, Napanee. This song pretty much sums up small town life. Nobody's Fool: Avril is like rapping this song. Nobody's Fool is about being your self and not ever changing for anyone. You've got to be you! Too Much To Ask: This song is about being with a guy until he stops caring. The guy turns out to be like all the rest and stops being fun when he starts worrying about being cool. Is it too much to ask for a guy to be real? Naked: this song is about when you're in love, your protective shield comes down. Avril sings about how she tried to hide her real self, so she wouldn't get hurt in a relationship. Her plan failed when this guy came around and found the real Avril. But it feels good for AVril, to let her guy see the real her. There are also two bonus on the c.d. that you have to find by putting the c.d. in your computer.
Free Music Review: Best Debut by Young Singer/Songwriter in a Loooong Time Hit: 5 Stars
I am passionate about music. I played professionally in my younger years and now that I'm old (over 40), I spend a lot of time searching for and listening to great music, both old and new: mostly alternative, rock and pop in that order. I own more than 1,000 records, read reviews for and sample hundreds of albums per year, and buy at least a hundred albums per year.I have rarely posted reviews but feel compelled to do so in this case. I really enjoy female artists, particularly those with strong melodies, original and interesting song structures and truly great voices. For example, I own everthing produced by Aimee Mann, PJ Harvey, Heather Nova, Tanya Donnelly and Beth Orton (new release in July!!). Upon first listen on MTV and after the first time through this album, I had a rare reaction to Avril, namely: if I owned a record company (my dream one day), I would do whatever it took to sign her. Yesterday. She is that rare artist with the whole package of songwriting ability, vocal ability, instrumental ability and attitude, necessary to produce a remarkable catalog of work over a long career. This girl (woman?) is a major talent. I would bet serious money that she will not only be around, but making progressively better music for years to come. The person on here who said otherwise is absolutely clueless. If she wants to make music, she will have an audience, be it huge or niche (more likely huge). Quality music always has an audience. I believe Avril (what a weird name, huh?) is one of those special talents, who almost inexplicably, manages to produce music of amazing critical quality, while being wildly popular at the same time. I still find it strange that someone like Alanis has achieved such popularity. While she is a great artist (I love all three of her albums, yes even the middle one); it is bizarre that she is popular and others are not (can you say PJ Harvey, Kristin Hersh, Juliana Hatfield, Heather Nova, Veruca Salt or Sleater-Kinney). To all you snobs out there, who put too much stock in professional reviews, DO NOT write this girl off simply because she will be VERY popular. She is among the select few that should be BOTH critically acclaimed and hugely popular. Suffice to say, this is one of the best albums, debut or otherwise, female artist or otherwise, I have heard in years. The lyrics are suprisingly mature given her age, but folks the beauty is the musicality of the songs and the quality of her vocals. My goodness, what a record. Every song is so well constructed (think harder Aimee Mann from I'm With Stupid), with great melodies and performed/produced with such class, balance and maturity (she worked with good people). And to those who quibble with her enunciation.....get a life! I cannot remember a pop/rock singer with more talent or with more developed skills at this age. She has such range, both high and low, and also hard and soft. She sings with style and maturity that would be impressive for a 30 year-old, let alone a 17 year-old. If you hadn't seen her, I defy you to tell by listening, that she is 17 years or that this is her debut. She is quite simply, an awe-inspiring talent. While there are other young talents (Michelle Branch and Spirit Room is impressive, Pinks's second album is very, very good, and Mandy Moore's current release is strong, really!), Avril is on a another level, folks. After listening to this album ten times, I'll go out on a HUGE limb and predict it may ultimately (assuming it wears like I think it will) hold a candle to some of the strongest debuts of the 90s. And that list includes Nirvana, Radiohead, Garbage, PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Liz Phair, and yes, Alanis' debut, which surely was a monumental record. Yes her lyrics can be a bit much, but get over it. She has proven to write great music. "Let Go" is not unlike "Jagged Little Pill," in that, even if you completely ignore the lyrics, the music itself blows your mind. I don't understand or relate to all of Alanis' words, or for that matter, all of the words from Nirvana, Radiohead or REM (some major, major talents): but it just doesn't matter. The music is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Avril is like that.
Free Music Review: One of the authentic girls Hit: 5 Stars
I have mixed feelings about the person Avril Lavigne. She claims to be a hardcore skater-punk, but yet I see her dressed in feminine clothes. Whether she's a poser or not, isn't the case, because this music rocks. I could care less who the girl is, this CD is a wonderful work of art. 1)Losing Grip - The album kicks off with a powerful guitar-driven song. This is one of the heavy rock songs on the album, filled with angst and Lavigne's powerful voice. Sounds kind of like Alanis. Immediately we see the strength of Lavigne's voice. 5/5 2)Complicated - Must I describe this song? We've all heard it I'm sure. It's one of the pop tracks. I like the lyrics and it has a really good message - don't change due to peer pressure, just be yourself. 5/5 3) Sk8r Boi - Despite the ridiculous spelling, this song rocks. It's going to be Lavigne's next single, and no wonder! It's definitely the punk-rock song of the album. The guitars are great. While the lyrics are simple, they're highlighted by Lavigne's strong, youthful voice and tell a story. Her voice is fun, fast-paced and full of energy in this song. 5/5 4)I'm With You - I really like this song. It's slow but not boring. It's lyrical shortcoming is made up for by Lavigne's voice and the background music. It really gets stuck in your head, and her voice is *incredible* towards the end of the song. 4.5/5 5)Mobile - A really great song. This one is slightly punk, and kind of nostalgic. It's about having to adapt to changes. The chorus is really cool. 5/5 6)Unwanted - another heavy rock song! Like Losing Grip, it is filled with anger and power. Avril is obviously mad at a guy who dumped her, and definitely pours it all out in this song. Awesome guitars. 4/5 7)Tomorrow - Eh, it's okay. Her voice sounds pretty but it just kind of drags. The lyrics are good though. 3/5 8)Anything But Ordinary - Lavigne should *definitely* release this as a single. Great music, awesome lyrics, incredible vocals. This song clearly displays Avril's fervent longing to live life to the fullest. The bridge of the song is wonderful, filled with passion. This one really gets stuck in your head. One of the best songs on the album. 5/5 9)Things I'll Never Say - A good song, but not one I'd take seriously. Infatuation and feelings hidden inside. A really "happy" tune, definitely a youthful song. 4.5/5 10)My World - This one rocks! It's all about Lavigne. She describes her hometown and daily life. She even talks about washing her hair. The way she sings this is really cool, just like a "whatever" tone. She talks about Napanee like it's quite boring, but hey at least she made a song about it. 5/5 11)Nobody's Fool - A lot of people didn't like this because she raps the verses, but I didn't mind it. She doesn't really rap it, she just says it. The chorus is sung, and really great. It's all about staying true to yourself. She says she refuses to let anyone change her, and that it's not worth trying. A really good song to describe herself in the music business, she doesn't let herself be bossed around. 5/5 12)Too Much To Ask - Starts off with a really "sad" type of guitar tune. The lyrics are kind of shallow, but it clearly shows an exasperated, fed-up tone that shows Lavigne is sick of her failing relationship. A good "getting-over" song. 4/5 13)Naked - I'm not sure if I like the whole message of the song, but basically this guy knows her so well he can see right through her, and she can't hide her feelings from him. Perhaps it's about being and open and trusting people you care about. In any case, it's a good closer to a great album. 4/5 All in all, putting the artist's true personality aside, this album is wonderful. Extremely impressive vocals and guitars. I looked on the album sleeve, and apparently she didn't play guitar at all, some guy named Evan did it for the whole album. In any case, the background music was alternative-like and a good break from all that annoying synthesized pop. Avril Lavigne is a mix of pop-rock. She's definitely not a pop princess. This is honest, real music from a seemingly real girl. It's definitely worth a listen.
Free Music Review: People! This is a CD for crying out loud! Hit: 5 Stars
I'm re-posting this review because many people do not understand. I've seen and read many negative reviews in the past done stating that Avril "is a poser," or "she is a disgrace to all punk bands." I'm just going to tell you, this is a CD, not a poster of Avril, which you may judge. Any Avril fans also know that she NEVER claimed to be punk (anybody who says that she is punk is wrong). It seems like everybody here is judging her looks and putting a stereotype on her, and not paying to close attention to the albums content. If you're going to give this CD a star, don't do it just because you hate her as a person, do it because you hate her MUSIC. There's a good chance that if you hate Avril as a person, then you are going to love this CD. If you are considering buying the CD, read my grades. I loved this CD. If you love Michelle Branch or Alanis Morrisette then you are going to love this CD!1. "Losing Grip"- A+ [single] Good song, kind of pop, kind of rock. Really pop in the beginning, then turns to rock. About a breakup (like many of her other songs) and betrayal. It was also a single on the radio for a short amount of time. 2. "Complicated"- A+ [single] You've seen the music video, you've heard it on the radio, it's a single. Beautiful song. Enough said. 3. "Sk8er Boi"- A [single] A cute song. It's rock/pop song about a girl and boy that secretly both liked each other but the girl would never tell. It's also got a lesson to it. At the End, Avril sings about having a relationship with that boy. 4. "I'm With You"- B+ [single] This is a nice, winter-y song, that would be beautiful if Avril worked on it just a little more. It's got a nice violin when it's played, but towards the end Avril sounds like she's getting out of tune or possibly shouting. 5. "Mobile"- A Awesome song, awesome guitars. It's about moving away and leaving everything behind, and about changing. A song almost everybody can relate to if they ever moved before. 6. "Unwanted"- B Good the first few times, but definitely not her best. Like "Losing Grip" its kind of about betrayal, but its guitars are much harder, and the lyrics are not her best, and are a little on the strange side. 7. "Tomorrow"- B+ Not the best song either, unless you're in a bad mood, because this song is just slow. Just like "Mobile," it's about changing (sorta) and carries the "I'm not ready" message. The only instrument really played is the guitar in this song. 8. "Anything But Ordinary"- A+ A very nice song, that's about being weird (and maybe just not fitting in). The lyrics are a little strange, but the song overall is very cute. It's kind of like Michelle Branch's "You Get Me." One of my favorites on the CD. 9. "Things I'll Never Say"- A+ Cute song, with nice guitars in the beginning. Sure, it's a little juvenile, but I admire her way of writing this one. Anybody who has a crush can relate to this one! 10. "My World"- B This song is about Avril and her growing up, but I really think she doesn't need this song tacked onto this CD. Not the best song on the CD, it doesn't reflect her talent. 11. "Nobody's Fool (If)"- A+ This is a fun, half rap, half pop/rock song. Nice guitars in the beginning, and Avril does a good job with the rapping. I usually hate rap, but when Avril does it, it's good! It's about somebody trying to turn her into somebody else. You need to "step up" and sing this one! 12. "Too Much To Ask"- B- Not the best song on the CD, either. It's probably the worst song on the CD. The lyrics aren't the best, either... it could use some work, and her voice isn't her best. It's another song that's about not being true to yourself. 13. "Naked"- A This is one of Avril's more romance-like songs. It's about ... yeah, you know. :P It's kind of pop, though- but it is a song about a deep relationship! OVERALL GRADE: 94/100 --A Enjoy! And remember to check for Avril Lavigne's 2nd album (she promises it will be more `rock-ish'), coming late this year or early 2004! ;)
