Free Music Review: Yes, Yes, Yes! B.B. Is Back! Hit: 4 Stars
After the release of Buddy Guy's disappointing "Skip Deep", which featured four excellent songs and lots of filler, I learned that B.B. King would be releasing a new album. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the new disc would contain covers of Blues classics that B.B. hasn't done in the past. This disc is a welcome return to form for Mr. King. I recently reviewed his live dvd that came out earlier this year, and stated that his singing sounded off, he played very little guitar, and the setlist was poor. That's why this album is such a pleasant surprise! Though his voice isn't nearly as powerful and captivating as it was on "Live At The Regal" (and this is certainly understandable, given his advanced age), this is a wonderful disc, considering that B.B. is now 82 years old. He can still play and sing the Blues when he has the proper direction in the studio and/or is allowed to just be himself, and is not forced to do Pop duets with Gloria Estefan. On this cd, "Backwater Blues" is particularly captivating, and the inclusion of two Lonnie Johnson songs is very pleasing. There are even some songs on this album of which I was previously unaware. I can't give this album five stars because it's not as good as B.B.'s best, but, again, considering the Ambassador of the Blues' age, this is a fantastic release. I hope that B.B.'s next record is very similar to this one, and that he lives to be one-hundred years old. Thank you very much, Mr. King!
Free Music Review: Ethos Reviews: B.B. King - One Kind Favor Hit: 4 Stars
This album marks a triumphant return to the roots of blues, where B.B. King made his name a household one. His career has spanned a entire lifetime and has reached many generations, and still to this day, well into his 80s, is recording some fine music. However, in 2008, he cut his best record in a decade with One Kind Favor. And as I said, it was a return to the roots, where B.B. is his best. In fact, not only is it his best album in the past ten years, but one of my personal favorites he has ever made.
One Kind Favor is not simply a return, but also a departure from the work he has done as of late. Many of his other recent works have been filled with musical guest stars, glossy productions, and sometimes even some reduced guitar work from King himself. 1997s Duece's Wild was a guest star album, as was 2005's 80, where King celebrated his 80th birthday. 2003's Reflections was a very glossy number, with a very modern sound, and while it was a pretty good album, I didn't like the fact that King didn't seem to have too many leading guitar solos, they were mostly performed by a bandmate. These are the primary reasons as to why One Kind Favor is just that good. It isn't hindered by anything, and gives you exactly what you expect to hear: B.B. singing and playing the blues...

Free Music Review: B.B. King - One Kind Favor Hit: 4 Stars
One Kind Favor (2008, Geffen) B.B. King's twenty-fourth studio album. ***1/2
Long hailed as the "King of the Blues," B.B. King is back with an array of blues covers. There's nothing out of the ordinary and his style hasn't changed much, and what's surprising is that even at eighty-two years old, his signature voice doesn't sound weathered at all. It's a bit of a slow-starter, as One Kind Favor eases in with the jazz-flavored "See That My Grave is Kept Clean." The most invigorating and soulful moments don't come until the second act, really opening up with "The World is Going Wrong" and "Blues Before Sunrise." The ensuing songs are equally rattling and rollicking, especially "Backwater Blues" which features King's best and most convincing vocal performance on the entire album. If you love the blues, you love the King, and although it's not his greatest work, it's still enthralling to hear a master make a tried genre sound as good as ever. (Blues Before Sunrise, Backwater Blues, Sitting On Top of the World)
