Free Music Notes for One Kind Favor

Free Music Review: As Good as Ever
Hit: 4 Stars

Amazing he can still sing this way at his age.
Best stuff in years.

Free Music Review: Great music poorly produced
Hit: 3 Stars

I purchased this CD from the store and listened to on a very good home sound system as well as in the car and on my computer and always came away feeling frustrated by the way in which it was mixed/produced. The songs are great, BB's singing and guitar playing are great (as usual) but the mix is drowned out by flabby bass sounds for the most part. It seems that BB is always fighting to be heard over the rest of the mix, with the piano fills or the horn section rolling right over his singing and/or his guitar playing. If you listen carefully to "I Get So Weary" you'll get the feeling that every musician is in his own world playing something different than everyone else. This is particularly noticeable in the second half of the song. It is a shame that such a great artist with such great material has to be presented in this way. Even in the slow, quiet numbers such as "Backwater Blues", the presence of that "flabby" bass muddies up the mix and robs the song of that crucial "space" between the notes which is so important in conveying the spirit of this wonderful music. I am diehard BB King fan and had to have this album. Therefore, I would not discourage any other blues aficionado from buying it. I just wanted to make you aware that the problems you may hear in the sound are not due to MP3 compression. They are, unfortunately, built into the mix. In my opinion, if this turns out to be BB's last studio album, it would be very, very disappointing. Unfortunately, the producers of ONE KIND FAVOR did not take a cue from the way BLUES ON THE BAYOU, probably BB's best album to date, was recorded and produced. Then, again, that album was done only with BB's band and without any outside producers interfering with the great blues players doing what they do best.

Free Music Review: Wonderful blues, unbelievably bad sound
Hit: 2 Stars

It is a crime for one of the greatest artists of our age to have his talents so dishonored by such an incredibly bad recording. This is one of the worst-sounding albums I have ever heard, and I have been a hi-fi buff since my teens in the 1960's (and also worked in the hi-fi field back in my college days). Particularly execrable is the bass: tubby, thuddy, muddy. The rest of it sounds like an MP3 on really cheap speakers. I found myself wondering if the recording engineers and producers were teenagers or twenty-somethings who grew up thinking great sound was downloads from the itunes store heard on earbuds. I'm sorry to rant, but this is outrageous. If you want to hear what properly-engineered-and-recorded blues sounds like, check out BB King's collaboration with Eric Clapton on "Riding with the King."

Free Music Review: One Kind favor would be a reason for buying
Hit: 2 Stars

I in general like BB King but I was disappointed by the tracks on this recording. It sounded like a rehash of items taken from old CD's. I think BB should consider some new material by current song writers before he releases a new recording.

Free Music Review: ONLY HIS AGE CAN EXCUSE THIS LAME OFFERING
Hit: 1 Stars

You can either say "wow, that is awesome for an 83 year old" or you can be honest and say that it is a shame that this cd had to be released. B B is much better than this ( or at least WAS ). This incredibly lame cd does absolutely nothing for the BB legend. He was never a speed merchant and it was all about the tone and that killer vibrato. Coupled with his emotive voice, he was one of the best BLUES man out there. The voice is still OK, but there is just no fire left for these covers.
If this is your first exposure to BB, you might well ask what all the fuss is about. The singing is listless and the guitar playing is like a caricature of the great BB. It might well be the best cd ever by an 80 someting, but that's all it is. Against any of the comparable BLUES players, this just does not cut it. The appaling sound quality often mentioned elsewhere, was most probably an attempt by the producer to add some VINTAGE feel to the recording and to muffle some of the more average notes that pass for solos on this release. I have seen BB LIVE on at least 4 occasions and the man was a giant. This release just screams "WRING THE LAST DROP OF CASH OUT OF THIS ANCIENT MASTER" Before he can't do it any more ( which really is about now ).
