Free Music Notes for The Heart Of Tha Streetz Vol. 2

Free Music Review: No longer a Baby.
Hit: 4 Stars

I've already explained in my We Got This review that I'd never followed B.G. as a solo artist, despite riding the Cash Money wave back in the late nineties. He never seemed too captivating an artist, and there were just more charismatic emcees on his label that made me overlook him. Even though he created the Bling Bling craze, that was more of a curse than a gift; and I never checked out his platinum Chopper City album either. In 2007, I'm hoping to hear a different artist than the B.G. I heard nearly a decade ago. Though this album was released last year, do I get from this album what i was hoping for?

Very much so. B.G. has certainly improved since his days with Cash Money, sharpening his flow, and garnering a mic presence that overshadows most other emcees on the same track. His voice is pleasently high-pitched, similar in vein to his rival, Weezy; while B.G. isn't nearly as creative an emcee as Weezy F. Baby, he's still a highly talented, and improved emcee like his former partner-in-rhyme. While We Got This did nothing to get me acquainted with B Gizzle, I'll go as far to say that The Heart Of Tha Streetz Vol. 2 is the perfect introduction to B.G.

Back in the day, B.G. used to sound like nothing more than an arrogant kid hoping to get some bling and cash. Although B.G. still has his materialistic ways at heart, he's a grown men now, and it shows throughout most of the album. While not dropping knowledge at the tip of a Yankee caps, B.G. still sounds like he's learned from the various mistakes he's made in the past. He has also gone into a more hardcore direction, and it works very well for B.G.; while most emcees who try to go the straight-up gangsta-rap route these days fail with few exceptions(The Game is probably the most prolific traditional gangsta rapper these days), B.G. is one of the few who can pull off this image very well.

B.G.'s street-tracks are definitely the highlights of this album. "I Ain't Got Nothing," "Kill Or Be Killed," "Real N*****," and "**** 'Em" are definitely some tight tracks from The Gizzle, where he uses his rough edges as an extreme positive in his style. His raspy voice sounds tailor-made for any beat, and certainly boosts the quality of his delivery, also adding some authentic elements to his unapologetic lyrics. However, his party tracks are just as hot; the Mannie Fresh produced "Move Around" is the best example of this. Definitely the best cut on the album, Move Around is equipped with an amazingly catchy backdrop from Mannie, a hilarious, yet quite serious chorus("raised on bread and balogney"), and some dope verses from B.G.

B.G. isn't one of the best lyricists in the game, as he definitely still suffers from some cliches; however, considering the market B.G. caters to, he is more than sufficient enough an emcee to make himself stand out in a very crowded market. The Heart of Tha Streetz Vol. 2 is a great re-introduction to the emcee whose name used to be an acronym for Baby Gangsta; no longer a Baby, The Gizzle keeps it as Gangsta as possible on this release. Pick it up.

The Heart Of Tha Streetz Vol. 2 Poster

2006 may just be the B.G. comeback year that's been bubbling over since his acrimonious split with Ca$h Money. The Heart Of Tha Streetz, Vol. 2 (I Am What I Am) is the follow-up to last year's The Heart Of Tha Streetz, Vol. 1. So what's different this time around? How `bout a long-awaited reunion with hit-maker Mannie Fresh for starters! And a killer new single called 'Move Around' also featuring Mannie. From start to finish, The Heart Of Tha Streetz, Vol. 2. (I Am What I Am) is undoubtedly the strongest of the 4 album's B.G.'s released through KOCH Records/Chopper City.
