Free Music Notes for B'DayFree Music Review: B'Day: The Best Of 2006 Hit: 5 Stars
When I heard the first single from B'Day ["Deja Vu"], I wasn't sure that I was going to buy the album. Then I heard "Ring The Alarm" and I absolutely loved it. At first, I was going to download some tracks from the album but my dad was taking too long to get my iTunes card and I couldn't do it. So I decided to buy B'Day and I am SO glad that I did.
One big theme throughout the album is a more pop/dance theme and I like Beyonce's songs like this. This leaves the album on the lacking side in terms of ballads but that's okay because they're pretty good.
"Deja Vu" and "Upgrade U" are two great songs, both featuring beau Jay-Z. While in "Deja Vu" [1st single], Jay-Z's raps are okay while Beyonce has to pick up his slack, "Upgrade U" takes the crown on this album. Jay-Z only has one rap but it is much better than both raps are "Deja Vu." To some people, Beyonce may come off as materialistic or vain, I like this approach. The music works well with Beyonce's voice [which she gets to show off in this one]. My favorite part of the song is the outro where she goes through item by item what she can provide for her man. The song is so catchy, I'm glad that this is the rumored fourth single off the album.
"Ring The Alarm" and "Kitty Kat" are opposite sides of the spectrum. "Ring The Alarm" shows Beyonce in a light we haven't seen her in before: angry. I immediately took to this song because the sirens were entoxicating, her voice was very powerful and the hook was very catchy. The video is also really good [albeit a little low-budget]. "Kitty Kat" emerged as another one of my favorites because of Beyonce's more soothing voice on the song where she is telling her "kitty kat" to leave since her man doesn't want it anymore. Another bonus on this track is that Beyonce even delivers a little rap! It's really cool when she raps and she should do it more often. I really hope that this is the sixth single.
"Green Light" and "Freakum Dress" are two other great dance tracks that both show off Beyonce's voice the best in terms of more pop-influenced songs. "Green Light" has great verses and a softer third verse. Two phrases are repeated and are my favorite parts of the song: "Give it to mama" and "when you hold it up traffic, green means go!" "Freakum Dress" is cool because you can jsut listen to it and want to party. It's about forgetting your old man and going out with the girls. Also she shows a little naughty side on this one: "Little did he know, my man gonna take it off tonight."
"Get Me Bodied" is where Beyonce shows off her voice yet again in this great party track. It's definitely one of the album's highlights.
There are really only two ballads on the album: "Irreplaceable" and "Resentment." "Irreplaceable" is my favorite of the two because it's more catchy and I personally like Beyonce when she's kicking a man to the curb. She tells her man that she can have another man by tomorrow and that he's not irreplaceable [a good song to listen to when you're angry at someone]. "Resentment" is an okay song. Beyonce does show off her voice so that's aplus but it's not really much. This is, in my opinion, the worst off the album.
This album is so strong and it really only has one weak link: "Suga Mama." The song is a more dance track but it sounds kind of old school and I'm not into that style very much [except for Christina Aguilera]. It should have been replaced with one of the bonus tracks.
As of right now, I know of four tracks that were not released on B'Day or were only released in certain places. They are all great songs and I have them all on my iPod.
"Lost Yo Mind" was available as a pre-order bonus on iTunes and I love it. Sort of reminiscent of "Ring The Alarm" since Beyonce is screaming on this one and her voice sounds amazing. I thought it was funny how at the beginning she says "OMG, you done lost you motha[blurred] mind!" Just goes to show Bee can be funny and angry at the same time. "Back Up" was available to buy with the album at Circuit City. It's my favorite of all the bonus tracks since it's just Bee in party mode. Once again, she delivers a sort of compliment to herself: "She ain't no average chick, she's the baddest chick." Plus, the ending slows down and it sounds really cool. "Creole" is another great song but it is kind of strange. While there is no dobut that it is catchy, it may not make sense to some people [including me]. "All my yellow bones get on the floor, all my red bones get on the floor, all my brown bones get on the floor, we gon mix it up and you call it creole." I assumed she was talking about race but I wasn't really sure. However, if you find a way to download it, then I would recommend it. "Beautiful Liar" is the missing ballad with a Spanish influence. This would have been the perfect song to replace "Suga Mama" with since it's strong and it would provide more ballads on the album.
B'Day was made in only two weeks but I think this is Beyonce's strongest album to date. I am so glad that I picked it up and so should you. Finally, here is a list of singles that are confirmed/rumored versus my opinion.
Confirmed:
Deja Vu [featuring Jay-Z]
Ring The Alarm
Irreplaceable
Rumored:
Upgrade U
Green Light
No Rumors Yet but there will be six singles.
My Opinions [In This Order]:
Upgrade U [featuring Jay-Z]
Ring The Alarm
Irreplaceable
Green Light
Kitty Kat
Freakum Dress
Oh, I forgot to mention that if you buy the album, two tracks are added as bonus. There is an extended mix of "Get Me Bodied" but it's not realy worth anything since Beyonce just adds a little thing at the end that is actually pretty annoying. "Listen" is another bonus track that is also on the Dreamgirls soundtrack. It's pretty good and Beyonce holds her voice at the end so it's good in that area.
Overall, this is THE pop album to get of this year and I'm sure in 2007, she'll win a grammy for this.
B'Day PosterJapanese pressing of 2006 album features 15 tracks including bonus international versions, 2 hidden tracks and the Japan only track 'Creole'. Sony. History may prove Beyoncé's B'Day to be a rare double-whammy of an achievement. Not only is it destined to hold up as one of the thumpingest, most polished-sounding discs of 2006, it's also bound to loose a new phrase into the popular lexicon: a "freekum dress" (n.), as described on a same-named track halfway through this excellent CD, is a "right-fittin'" garment owned by every woman; "when they act wrong, that's when you put it on." Linguistic hijinks aside, here is Beyoncé as the public rarely sees her: fully liberated and artistically fearless. "Ring the Alarm," a big-banging, fire-alarm-clanging wake-up call to a cheating man, finds her seething; "Kitty Kat," a feline-like size-up of a stale relationship helped along by the still innovative Neptunes, shows her spurned; the womanly, fire-in-the-belly come-on "Suga Mama" gets her way, way worked up; and the crackling, vocally volcanic "Resentment" steeps her in Aretha-caliber soul. For all the disc's solo trailblazing, though, where it really soars is on one of two duets with Jay-Z: While "Up Grade U" chugs along entertainingly enough about the good life ("I'm talkin' spa bags and fly pads and rooms at the Bloomberg"), opener "Deja Vu" blasts out a bomp-bomp beat nobody with a head to nod could resist. Cake, candles, and Cristal or no, B'Days rarely get this good. --Tammy La Gorce More from Beyoncé and Destiny's Child Dangerously in Love, Beyoncé | #1's, Destiny's Child | Destiny Fulfilled, Destiny's Child | Survivor, Destiny's Child | Live in Atlanta (DVD), Destiny's Child | Destiny's Child: The Platinum's on the Wall (DVD) |
